Sorry to hear that.

Serial numbers/pics/identifying marks would help

Gutting... do you think someone knew it was there or did they take random stuff?

Yes I think they knew it was in there. I do accept the main garage door had been open but we live in 1/2 a mile from any other house so no one just walks by. The way they removed the engine demonstrates they knew exactly what they were doing.

Also they left power tools and other items that where left nearby that they could have easily taken.

I have contacted the previous owner and he thinks the serial number is written in the manual. That's on our sailing boat so will pick up at the weekend and post here

Does the insurance company know the garage door was open ? Are they still paying out with that disclosed ?

We will keep our eyes open for it too. Serial number will obviously help

Merely trying to ascertain if he's getting paid out that's all. May also give a word of warning to others to prevent similar situations!

I think it's a fair enough comment from Peter... it had crossd my mind that my insurance co are quite up front they will not pay out on an engine where you haven't recorded serial numbers. If Jon is covered by insurance with similar clauses hope he turns up the number in his outboard manual.

I wondered if it was a general theft or targeted. Few years back our stables/outbuildings were broken into and they just pinched some ice creams from the freezer... really. They left a lcd TV, DVD player, DJ/PA gear, Zodiac packed in 2 bags, Tohatsu 9.8 and much more. Police commented that week in our area they were just targeting generators, chainsaws, petrol strimmers/hedgetrimers, quad bikes & expensive mowers.

We were very lucky because the one outbuilding they didn't look in had all those things.

I read the post as the door 'had' been open ( meaning someone could have seen it was in there) but that it wasn't actually open when it got nicked.

I'm not even going to mention the 'I' word ...

Peter

Absolutely. The door had been open the weekend beforehand. It was all locked up when the theft happened. The side door was kicked in to gain access. Picture below of the smashed door lock !
