12th Annual Pasty Hunt (note change in title)!! August 24
The 12th Annual Pasty (Run) Hunt will take place in and around Plymouth over the weekend - 3rd - 4th August with the 5th booked off work to extend the play time for those that can.
Due to other events the Pasty Hunt is happening later in the year then usual for 2024 , but hopefully this will bring some lovely weather and plenty of light for the evening cruise element.
Saturday 3rd August, Pasty Hunt, not just a run!! With an early evening meal at Nos Ferris.
This will see a departure time of 11.30 and instead of a straight run to the pasty location - you'll need to follow the clues.
This will not be a timed event but one designed to open up some of the areas not usually visited on a boat run. It'll guide you through some of the history of the port and surrounding locations and with the most accurate in their answers, wining the first prize as well as enjoying a great pasty at the breakpoint - fun and enjoyment in good company is guaranteed.
Following a pasty and possibly an ice cream, we'll head over to the River Yealm where we'll be on a rising tide to enjoy a pint and an early evening nibble at The Swan Inn before heading back to night time berths.
This will be approx 25nm outbound and 20nm return.
Sunday 4th August, crab sandwiches at Dartmouth (or Brownies at Salcombe) and an evening cruise to Calstock.
This is planned as a longer trip, enjoying some of the best coastline South Devon has to offer. Two lengths of trip to choose from of approx 16nm to Salcombe and if the weather allows a longer trip of 30nm to Dartmouth.
This will be a 10.30 departure.
Tides then should allow for an evening cruise up to Calstock to have tea at the Tamar Inn.
First we'll take a run over to the river Plym, just touching the mouth before taking in the sights of Plymouth Hoe and Smeatens Tower.
From there we'll follow the Tamar past Forder Bridge. Before heading past Babis Rd bridge, Royal Albert railway Bridge (one of Brunel's finest) and the Tamar road bridge followed by the Tamerton and Tavy bridges before pushing on up river we head towards Cotehele House and gardens, there are areas of open speed and restricted speed mooring areas.
The wildlife on this section is usually superb and cameras are well recommended.
Passing Cotehele we'll be at the final stop on this trip, Calstock. The pub will be open for snacks, a pint, coffee or large gin before we return to the open sea at the height of the tide.
Monday 5th -TBC this will be decided on the day based on the weather and success of the previous two days.

Hello - there's a FB event on a couple of the RIB pages- I best not link as it's a different forum but a search on the Pasty Run should find it.
Updates will be added to here too but not the combined chat.

Hi Andy,
I'll aim to join from Brixham, for at least 1 day - either join the hunt on Sat, with departing home, after Noss Mayo, or may will run down to meet on the way into Salcombe / Dartmouth on the Sun.
Potentially stay over Sat night in Plymouth if I get a pass

Looks like I won't make this one.....that weekend is the transfer date of a large operation I'm heavily involved in - will need to be on site for the first few days up north

Oh no, you'll be missed
The good news is it's a hunt this year, rather then just a run, so I'm sure we can catch up anther date and let you lose with the magnifying glass
Good luck with the release.

It's a pain, the transfer date was put back a month, however I need to be there for the transfer and first few days of operation.
I'm sure we'll catch up over the season - let me know when you're going to be out & about in S Devon.

Hello
It'll be great to see you and them out to play if you can.
If they don't, will be looking at using the hunt with some others during teh summer so would be able to get you a version for playing with.

2024 saw the biggest gathering of ribs yet for the first day of the annual Pasty Run.
17 ribs consisting of everything from a 4m Sea Rider up to a 7m ribcraft and the Umpires 6m Highfield Patrol met at the Breakwater fort on what was a cloudy but warm and dry August morning.
Clues, answer sheets and pens were handed out and the boats departed either on their own or in small groups to follow the clues and hunt that elusive pasty.
My plan was simple, hand out the question and answers papers, make sure everyone had a pen. Carry the dive clubs spare fuel in the massive space within the console on the Patrol, band have ready spare papers as some one was bound to lose one, and they did!
That didn't last long, effectively we had a mutiny on board. The crew wanted to take part and search out those answers. It's been a while since the usual crew has helmed a lifeboat, but it was as if he's never been away, captain was banished to the front seats, luckily the soft seat pads were on board. Stick forward, flat out, got to get there seemed to be the plan.
Simple questions such as the shape or colour of a window or door proved easy enough. Counting questions such as how many casements at Fort Bovisands proved a little trickier and you should have heard the debates, discussions and almost arguments over the bearings things pointed at or the more criptic clues around the Beatles and are they a boy (bouy) band!!!
Finally the first boat had followed the clues, read the bits on history, I didn't know that, was used often in the pub, and found their way into Fowey.
Just over 2 and a half hours of fun, entertainment and sea miles. Answer sheets were marked and first, second and third awarded.
Not all teams had made Fowey, one lost steering and returned to base, a couple of the single maned boats couldn't navigate, helm, read clues and write answers so the aborted and jumped off so we thought was it.
But no, what did we see arriving just as we were planning to leave, more of the fleet arriving. Ninety minutes after the last sub group we had our real winners arrive. The group worked hard to get the answers right, just a shame they missed the main prize, but we still had the fridge magnet so all was not lost.
All agreed it was a fun day, everyone learnt something from the clues and history and with the sun out for the best bit, the real reason for being there, the pasty, hopes were high for day two!!!

Day two of the pasty run saw the fleet head East to see what Devon could offer in the way of a pasty.
A smaller fleet saw 7 boats head out, unfortunately losing two due to fuel issues (engine not recieving any) meant four started the trip from Plymouth, meeting the fith along the way.
Dolphins, ganets, and what looked like a puffin made the trip entertaining as the fleet passed the sights of Bere Island and Hope Cove.
The crews used the flat conditions to try out other boats. Those from the Ribcraft world loved the padded bench seats on the Highfield Patrol as well as the windshield, which gave great protection to the youngsters helming, with the dolphins playing alongside!!
Being a busy august weekend the team moored up on a visitors buoy and instead of using the water taxi, pilled the helms into the only boat allowed to tie up on the jetty. It was a testament to the Sea riders free board we all kept dry feet!!
A pasty was found, a very good one to be fair, and after enjoying the donuts and browsing the offerings in the boating shops , the five boats left Salcombe after an hour or so to head back.
What a difference an hour can make!! The wind had pushed the seas up into a swell large enough for the high bow on the Patrol to come into its own, cutting through the waves and easily landing on the airborne jumps.
The 4m searider however didn't find it so comfy. By tucking in behind the bigger boats, the crew being lifted to keep weight forward and with some great encouragement over the radio Plymouth was made and new skills learnt.
The good news is the fleet then picked up another boat at Weir Quay ( which has a great tea room) and continued North, enjoying the flat calm waters of the Tamar.
With the Highfield leading the way Calstock was soon reached and food sought. Not on a Sunday cried the pub, the social club and the locals. Seems they stop serving at 4!!
On the way back we stopped to look at Humprie's boat from Beyond Paradise, if you ever watch it, you'll now know where to find it!!
After enjoying a pint, crisps and ice creams it was back to Plymouth, back to the marina, or slipways for those departing, and off to the Indian and planning for day three.
A great team effort and a superb day afloat.

Sounds like a great weekend Andy, shame I missed it.
I spent Saturday and Sunday nights in a transport cross-dock operation in Dunstable, checking all was running well and welcoming the transferring colleagues to our business. Know where I'd have preferred to be, but the transfer was successful and customer happy
