1st Annual Chicken Run

I know this is short notice but as one of the boats that chickened out of last Sunday's Nacho Run we thought that as the weather looks pretty damned good tomorrow we'll do our own run. If anyone else would like to join us we'll be launching from MDL Hamble Point at about 11.00 tomorrow (Sunday 14.01.18).

sorry but I do not agree with your statement that you chickened out last Sunday. You had your reasons and that's it.

Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow but no doubt we will catch up sooner rather than later in the Solent

Hey guys, we're not about tomorrow but with a bit of notice would certainly be up for some more days out from Hamble if you ever want some company (especially if the weather is a bit iffy).

Personally I think you made a good choice last week - was a bit interesting...

I certainly don't think you "chickened out" last weekend. Conditions were challenging even for the 7m+ boats.

I know I absolutely made the right decision not to try to take my boat out single-handed, and even with regular crew would probably have turned back very soon past Calshot spit!

Condition were worse than the Gropro footage shows - I thin the wide angle lens "flattens" the seas - you only have to look at the amount of spray hitting the A-frame mounted cameras to see quite how rough it was.

I think Avocet has been considering a possible alternate date later in Jan.

I'm sure there will be interest in an "icicle" run to Yarmouth no matter what it's called or when scheduled. I would be up for such a jaunt, but I need to get a towbar fitted to my new car I picked up yesterday.

BTW first impressions of my Skoda Kodiaq are very good

I admire your enthusiasm and keeness to get out.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was being a little tongue in cheek using the 'chicken' word, but having seen your go pro footage we know we made the right decision to stay home last week. Better to be on dry land wishing you were out there than being out there wishing you were on dry land, as they say.

I'm sure we'll catch up with you all soon as we're planning on getting afloat as often as we can now we have upgraded our boat.

Steve.

Well, we got out yesterday and the weather was perfect for our first run out on our own in this boat. Very little wind and flat calm sea. We left Hamble Point and headed out to the needles achieving 44 knots at WOT . Went into Yarmouth and had a lovely roast lamb lunch before heading back east with the water like glass. Another WOT blast and we were overtaken by about 10 Jetski's doing at least 50 knots then back into Southampton Water following the big sea cat.

All in all, a fantastic first run in our new Ribeye A600/F150 - we can't believe the difference in speed and sea keeping over our little 5m Bombard/F50. We also 'officially' named her 'Grey Pearl'.

Pics and vid to follow once Mrs FZ has edited them.

Glad you had a good trip

Far more sensible to do a first decent run in good conditions. Look forward to the video.

Very nice, wish I could have been out as well. Glad you had a successful first run, and enjoyed the new boat.

Instead, I was on the hard at the yacht club getting very messy whilst taking the broken exhaust apart! Will hopefully be back up and running in the next few weeks and see you at a future gathering.

It sounds like you had a great time in your new boat.
I'm jealous. We haven't been out in around three months
mostly because of a busted up leg. It has become apparent
to me that us older people shouldn't be out long boarding.
I've only just started to walk again, but spring is coming.
Looking forward to your vid.

Thanks guys. It was Mrs FZ's first time using i-movie to edit the vid. Now we have a gopro clone hopefully we can get some better footage in future.

LT, yes that slip is Hamble Point. It is quite slippery at low tide but our front wheel drive SUV pulled the boat and trailer up with a bit of wheelspin. As to cost I believe it is £50 which is very steep. We don't have to pay because we keep our boat at another MDL marina up here so we can use any MDL marina and facilities free of charge.

I've just seen that Andre has posted about going to Yarmouth for lunch this coming Sunday. Met looks to be ok so if it is we'll be going down.

Ouch £50 for launch and recovery/

Interesting what yuo say about MDL - I keep my boat e in Devon at an MDL site, they've never mentioned free or reduced rates at any other MDL Marina....will need to have little chat with them
