21st Jan 2007 Thames trip

I am planning a trip from Putney down the Thames to the Barrier and return on 21/1/07 . I have a couple of others keen to do this . Anyone else welcome to join . The only plan so far is the date !

I'm moored a few hundred feet from Putney Bridge and would be possibly up for a potter as long as I haven't got the boat in dry dock at that time.

Will keep an eye on this thread

Yes weather permitting we aim to leave Putney at around 1100 and count so far

Sounds like a good idea.

Is there a launch near the barrier/silvertown area that i could launch from.

I would be coming down from lincolnshire (along way i know) and stopping near one of our factories in Silvertown (knights road).

Not sure about launch sites down there , we will be turning round just by the barrier to return to Putney via a lunch stop at Tower Bridge area would you be joining us for for that bit ?

Based on recent performance could end up having to pull out at a later stage, but seriously hoping to make this one!

Chris,
Poplar Rowing Club is one possibility , another is Bargehouse lane in North Woolwich . I would only use the later at slack high tide . ( 4X4 essential here ) . Check out the boatlaunch website , and don't under estimate the tides on the Thames . Let me know if you need more info . Bern.

Some advice for visiting the Tidal Thames.

Please ensure that you respect the speed limit of 8 knots from where you are launching in Putney until Wandsworth Bridge.

It's not far and after that you can open up.

The reason I say this is that there have been a number of incidents recently involving visiting boats around the Putney area and there are a few people based at the various sailing and rowing clubs who will call the river police without hesitation if they see any boat putting up too much wash. You may get shouted at even if you are at 1 knot, but that's the nature of some of these people (not all) who consider the Thames their river and don't welcome visitors in motor boats.

If anyone gets reported the River Police will be waiting for you down stream.

The other thing the River Police are doing at the moment is stopping boats who do not keep the the right hand side of the river. You won't get prosecuted for this, but they may pull you over and take a good 20 minutes taking your details.

One other thing...take a bread knife or similar on a piece of rope. There is a lot of debris in the Thames at the moment and chances are you will pick something up on the prop that will need cutting away.

Thanks for that Timw good advice .
Do you or any others have access to tide table I can't seem to get forward enough to see what time high tide is on the 21st.
I am off skiing so won't be able to look at this site till Wed 17th .

If you go to the Port of London website, they have tide tables...knock an hour off for Putney...

but you can launch and recover at all states of tide although it's easier when slack water.

Thanks very much for the advise.

I was only looking at launching close to the Barrier end as it would save me towing the rib accross to Putney and then back again. This in addition to have already travelled down from Lincolnshire and then the journey back.

If there was someone else who could also launch up this way, given i'm a novice to the Thames. Possibley about 9.30-10am ish. We could then cruise down to meet the others at Putney for 11 and let the jolly begin.

Thanks for the Port of London info good website .
I reckon HW at Putney then is at 1433 Z so we will be getting the ebb on our return from the Barrier . Recovery at about 1530 - 1600 .

Hi Chris

I always launch at Poplar which is great - but I would suggest also requires a 4 x4 to be safer than sorry when the tide is anything but high - although I have always found the river bank very firm. Poplar also has the advantage of the Rowing club facilities. Parking can be a bit of a pain although on a Sunday you should find a suitable spot (on the surrounding roads) fairly easily or you can often park at the top of the slip if you separate trailer/car.

I usually contact the club captain out of courtesy and to check that the slip will not be clogged up due to training/event. Contact Chris Kendall (captain@pbdrc.co.uk)

Provided you have somebody to hold the boat (against the current) or park the car you'll have no problem navigating the river or traffic which will be light.

I would come with you but I get back from a US business trip the day before and will be knackered (and my wife would kill me

).

hi lurcher

initially count me in, i have a bit of an issue with where to launch, i have a merc 320cdi estate although rear wheel drive i would rther not dunk the rear end in the thames or is slip just very steep and slippery !!!

is any one going with a 4x4 that could help out????

Hi Ian,

Assuming i manage to get there, and do not have to pull out last minute, I'll be in my Freelander. Am happy to lend a hand, although first time out on a new clutch having burnt it out last time

(it had about 75000 miles on it mind

)

Not sure about the tide times mentioned before. Reading this site:-

I get low tide to be 1139 at Putney Bridge and high tide to be 1604 at Putney Bridge when following their time adjustments.

It also looks like it's pretty much a spring tide, so theirs likely to be lots of debris in the water.

If he's got time, I'll ask my Dad to check the Almanac.

I don't recall having seen it mentioned, but I'm assuming the launch site is Putney Embankment. Chas Newens marine are their, and they do launch recovery, although not sure of the cost.
I'd guess the launch is going to be on shingle, but not sure as can't remember how far down the cobbles go. Recovery likely to be near to high tide, so will be on the cobbled embankment itself, which makes it a quite easy drive on affair with a roller trailer. (as long as clutches etc hold out!!!)
