On what basis is that basis based?
I'd guess it CAN be worse out there and it's a 32 mile tow at worst! more likely an abandon as if it were that bad you couldn't be towed by another for that distance. They'd run out of fuel.
I'm a chicken and pretty paranoid about being 30 miles offshore. Still debating the risk/reward ratio ......

Oi! Hanoi Hanna, you're starting to panic the women and children. If you don't fancy the trip no-one will think any less of you for not going, but enough handwringing and foreboding already...

You worry too much. I was really unlucky to finish up with salt water in the fuel. For any other problem you could use the fuel in the broken down boat to help if a tow was needed. And that's if there wasn't enough knocking about in spare Kerny cans.
Although, in fairness its probably a good idea to have a bridle arrangement made up for a tow, side by side towing is not quick and its very wet

HP the problem is that you have not been out with us very often so I guess that you underestimate the people your will be out with
As you know with me it was a broken saddle which is a rare occurrence with any engine but more so with racing boats I am lead believe. What happened to Neil can be rectified at a marina also more spares will be carried for crossings like the Ireland trip just in case.
HP sometimes in life you gotta take risks which is okay if they are calculated ones so wise up man and get out there with the gang and have some fun
