Morning All

Looks like you all had a great trip in the end. I had to make a decision based on the info I had at the time. I had several members of BIBOA who had never crossed the channel before and they were going to do so in small boats. I did not want to take the risk and put them and BIBOA in jepardy etc. Unfortunately the info i had turned out to be wrong and i missed out on a great event. Still at sea its better to be safe than sorry. Glad you all enjoyed it.

I agree, safety is always paramount. The only thing I have to add is that any cruise should go ahead as planned and can be called off at the last minute if it so warrants - for whatever reason. The weather is changeable and people have taken the time off anyway to be there ready to go.

Hi Julian,

After long periods of hot weather, you can get very strong winds pick up with little warning.

It's one thing to make a marginal call for yourself in your well found boat, but as lead skipper, some of the boats and skippers would have been unknown to you.

Imagine the consequences if the conditions from your forecast did materialise and you had committed people into them.

By calling it off early, skippers could get together to make their own decisions as to whether they wished to proceed separately.

It's easy with hindsight to post "millpond" pictures but you had a tough call to make, and I think you did THE RIGHT THING with the information that you had at the time.

Thanks for that. It was a difficult decision to make but with the info i had and the boats that i was leading across the channel i think it was right at the time. Its a shame the weather turned out better than i thought but thats just one of those things., I gave all the skippers the info and they were all greatfull for the info i gave them and many managed to go back to work etc so all was not lost. If we had gone and it had turned out as forcast many people would have been put off boating and would have lost faith in the club and itd members, this has happened before in Ramsgate.

As I said before, you were quite right to call it the way you did.

We were three big boats with experienced crews with relatively short crossing distances.

You had far bigger responsibilities.

The bravest decisions are always the hardest to make.

You used the word "postpone" earlier. What about rescheduling for September ? I'd love to go again and the reason I didn't sign up this year was because the date clashed with JF's Poker Run (which was bloody brill !)

If September is a goer, check with JF because there's talk of another Poker Run then.

I hope to re arrange the event later in the year. I ve had quite a few people phone me up to ask me to do that so i will look into it etc. Also have lots of people who want to go to the Channel Islands for the day or weekend, so i will be sorting that out as well over the next few weeks. Keep you informed etc.

Julian and everyone else interested. Why not do a little crusie this way like we did last year. Stop off in Alderney for fuel and a rest (2hrs), then head westabout the Minquiers to St.Malo, then maybe up the Rance to Dinan. Easily done in a day and very pleasurable indeed. Just a thought.
