You must be crazy, be carefule when you launch the boat, yor car could follow the boat in to the water ...ice and snow can be slippery.

Good Luck with that Bogib!
Maybe not totally crazy, but a little bit can help make a good day, eh? - like diving Thingvellir in 3C!
We are heading your way in June (4x4s on MV Norrona, not RIBs), might catch a RIB trip when we get there....

Sveinki, yours still here in Reykjavik, why not join in tomorrow morning
If the car/trailer follows the boat.... well one car less to keep in the toy storage and more space for one more boat

Hope you guys are getting better weather up there than here on the west coast of Ireland - it's nasty. Don't forget to post a pic here!
Unfortunately we arrive after the 21st, but thanks! I might PM you closer to the time to check what is happening with RIBbaldar.

Cheesee was not taken out this morning well anyway 5 of us went out on Stefnir 7633 10.30 this morning, temperature showed -9 degrees C in my car on the way, almost clear skies and no wind.
The boat was put on water on snow/frozen slipway and once completed and all aboard the heading was for the village Akranes across the bay, then into Hvalfjörður (Whalefjord) to the whaling station. To Snarfari marina in Reykjavik and back to Kopavogur where Stefnir 7633 has its homebase.
Cruising in -9 degrees on 33 knoths holding camera bare handed was a hell and I had problem getting the glove back on again...... not recommended to anyone
Well this thread is useless without pictures, so here they come......

Here we approached the old (still used) whaling station where they take the whales and cut them up.

At least its calm and the sky is blue , I bet that windchill at 30+ kts is a killer .
I knew some kayakers who did a Trip up there a few years back , they talked of ice flows or ice bergs with narrow chanels between them . They had to go down the chanels but there was a danger that they could just close up at any time . Some local guys in fast boats helped them out in the end . Is that any where near you .

Well, pending on how you measure distance.... to me it is not far away 5 hours drive..... well I easily drive two hours (in UK) for good lunch/dinner and back
I would imagine they would have been at Jökulsár which is located on the south east corner.

. i can't remember the names of any places , can't even pronounce them anyway
Great pics thanks . Some cold snow and ice would be a welcome change from the grey wet winters we have . At least you can get out and still have fun
Shame the whaling station is still used

Thanks for those stunning pics, Bogib, that looks like a day to remember. A lot more snow than on our last trip to Hornvik (Hornstrandir) - but it brings back happy memories!
Nice RIB too :-)

Looks like a great day I notice that the Parker has no radar fitted(that I could see), do you get fog on the water in Iceland and do they use the Baltic for night rescues?

True, no radar fitted although the Garmin 4012 can accomodate radar, the Polish SAR has their Parker´s fitted with radar and the radar A-frame is above the consol, fog is not common in our waters, however during the winter we have up to 4 hours of daylight but almost 24 hours during summer. Yes the Parker 900 Baltic ICE-SAR is used for night rescues.
