France

Does anyone know what documentation is needed when entering French ports, or where I can find out?

You will need to be able to produce when requested;

Insurance cover note
You need to have at least third-party insurance. The cover note should be translated into French, your insurance company will be more than happy to do this.

VAT Receipt
You need to be able to prove that VAT has been paid on the boat. The original invoice will do.

Ships Radio Licence
If you have a marine VHF onboard you will need a Ships Radio Licence and operators certificate.

Small Ships Register
Your RIB will need to be registered on the Small Ships Register and you need to carry the paper work with you.

And don't forget your passport!

*British skippers in charge of a British registered boats do not require an ICC when cruising in French coastal waters.

But it wouldn't do any harm to have one, just in case you do getted stopped by an official who knows less about the requirements than you do!

Having said that, I have never been asked for any documentation at all when cruising to France . . .

Of course. The day I turn up in Cherbourg without all the bits and pieces will be the day they decide to check . . .

Guys,

Quick couple of questions.

How do you get on the small ships register?

&

VAT Receipt
How do I get this?

My boat was bought from a private seller in cash (£1750). I have no documents with it.....! - that sounds dodgy-ish!!!

Cross Channel Docs

Ok, phoned the RYA - & they sent me to the MCA - 02920448857

as I now understand it.

For a leisure craft (NON COMMERCIAL) all I need in paperwork is the Small Boat Register documentation (& your passport).

Failure to have the Small Boat Register documentation means your vessel can be inpounded & or a fine......

Insurance cover note - didn't say & forgot to ask!

VAT Receipt - not essential as it is a leisure vehicle.

Ships Radio Licence - only if fitted.

Send a message via Skype™ to batfalcon
We definitely

must carry a waterproof "Samsonite" for all this paperwork.

RIBase
Do you think it useful to fill out one of those freebie NHS type forms that give you gratis medical treatment in EU countries?
It doesn't cost anythingand might just help you if you damage a bit of yourself-easily done, believe me!

Good point, Brian.

E111 is the form.

You need to collect this from a Post Office and have it stamped. Go there armed with your NI number to save making two trips.
