Highline Transfer Practice
Not really a cruise more a get together in the Solent for a highline transfer practice with the Solent Search and Rescue Helicopter. For those unsure what a highline transfer is, this might help
Training exercise with Solent Coastguard - YouTube
During the visit to the MRCC last week it was mentioned that the SAR helicopter carry out 48 hours of training per week and look for varying sizes and types of vessels to carry out highline transfers. A prearranged time and date is booked through Solent MRCC who then pass the information to the SAR.
I am interested in booking a training slot with the SAR for next month (need to give 4 weeks notice). Plan will be to shoot out into the Solent to a prearranged location and time, meet up with the SAR helicopter and following their directions carry out a highline transfer to one or more suitable RIB's
I have the request form here, depending on the interest I will either book a day during the week or if possible (subject to their working practices) at a weekend if more of you are interested in coming along.
Let me know who's interested and I'll book a slot

Great thing to get involved in Landlord - this has a real world application, and whats more - its really good fun!! I would say it is a little misleading for them to tell you the helicopter can be "booked" however.... The SAR flight can never guarantee their movements and changes of plan are frequent. Get yourself on the list and hope for the best though bud!
Matt.

If there is a boat with a spare seat I'd be happy just to sit and watch (and record), pay for petrol (on the boat). I'm not sure a lowly 4m rib would cut it....I wonder if I could talk Steve into it on the Parker? :-)
Been up close under the old big sikorsky a few times (and even on Sunday we were quite close off Durlston)...it's impressive stuff and as an ex pilot amazing flying too...

Thanks Polarbear. Used to arrange it years ago when instructing on yachts and found it very worthwhile. Agreed a definite time and date may change last minute due to weather or contingencies of the job. However worth a go.
The rough plan will be to RV with the helicopter at a pre arranged point. Then use one RIB or more depending on their time, fuel, other plans to carry out a highline transfer between RIBs and helicopter.
Some of the learning points will be;
radio comms
lowering aerials etc
drop line for static release
lowering winchman to a RIB whilst underway at 14kts
steering a steady course etc
On the list so far

Tame. try doing in at 50ft level in the middle of the Atlantic with a boat going down on you. That sharpens the mind! Alan P

Sounds good. Date in the diary. Happy to be crew or skippering the Ballistic, as required.
Just curious about the location -- was that suggested on the request form? I'm thinking it could be reasonably busy there on a summer weekend. It may also result in practicing blowing a few yachts out of the way too
