Iceland 2005 ?

It’s a bit early to think about next year but I'm thinking about making a trip to Iceland at some point in 2005. Probably around June to September and wanted to see if there is any interest out there for a bit of offshore ribbing?

The trip would be Scotland - Shetland Islands - Faroe Islands and then a 270mile leg to Iceland.

If you are interested then you will know if your boat is capable of making that distance then let me know and I'll keep you upto speed with plans and dates etc. Or if you fancy making the trip but don’t have a boat then I always need crew !

Also if you are based in the Shetlands/Faroe Islands or even Iceland then I'd be pleased to hear from you.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark
I live in Iceland and would be more than happy to assist you guys as I have pointed out number of times on this foum as well as on Boatmad. Nice to see you again on the Rib.net Alan, long time no see. I was ribbing in the Solent last weekend and it was great fun in "moderate" sea.

Hi Mark

Count me in.

This is a trip I want to do anyway.

Only change I will need to make for my RIB is some extra fuel tanks, 270 miles is on the limit of my good weather range at present.

As family unlikly to go it may leave me with a few places on my RIB if anyone in interested.

Regards Gary

Guys

Much more response than I thought so I think we have a cruise.

Everyone who is interested in crewing on my boat I'll keep you upto date with suggested dates. If you have any dates that are no-go then let me know and I'll see what I can do.

GaryGee - Great news as I would much prefer to do this trip with other boats. My boat has about a 500nm range, more than me, so I will at least have some spare fuel on board. Although being as self sufficient as possible is the best way forward.

Simmons0 - I’m sure you’ll find that once you get into the rhythm the hours will pass by !!!

bogib - Thanks for the post. I will be in touch for local information and may bounce the plans off you. You'll get a reputation for looking after ribsters passing by !

Keith - Thanks for the links.

Although not upto speed with who has done this trip the only person I know who went from Scotland to Iceland is Chris Kaye who lives near me. For those who knew his boat SabreDrive, you'll know that this was no mean achievement.

Of course AlanP, Bear and others have passed by Iceland on their Atlantic voyages, but always heading South ( I think ).

Hi folks

Great news, this is a trip I have always facied but never facied it alone.

Good that their are a few, maybe even more later.
Nice that upto now we are all diesels, makes carrying reserves etc easier as we can all share if needed.

I plan to get some flexi tanks made but never much urgency as upto now 270 has been more then enough.
The ones I have designed & got prices on will hold another 300L, which should be more then enough. They sit along the tubes where they join onto the deck.

Looking forward to the planning etc.
Should be quite a trip.

Regards Gary

I think there were a couple of guys muttering about doing IoM to Iceland sometime next year.

I will investigate and get back.

Jon (on crutches at the moment so not boating!)

Jon

I know "Allen" on this site posted a thread last year but I have lost his Email. He was in contact with Chris Kaye, who provided some charts and advice.

If you know him it may be worth seeing if he is already in the planning stage.

Mark,

I'm not keen about forming a committee, but I am up for the trip to Iceland.

We had hoped to go this year but family circumstances and lack of time have now ruled it out, so aiming for next year sounds like a good idea.

Count me in

Allen

I lost your Email, which had your phone number on it.

I aggre about the committee unless we are in a pub and we are deciding on who's round it is next

Do you still have the charts / info from Chris Kaye ?

simmons0 - Speed all depends but I tend to cruise at between 30-33 knots. With your hull/engine I guess you cruise at 25 knots ?

Cheers

Mark

Hi folks

I wont be much faster than that.

I usually cruise at 26kts, which is 3000RPM and can hold this all day, assuming conditions allow.

I can only manage 36KTS WOT for short periods as im am pulling 3600RPM which is 200 above recomended.

The Ribcraft is a good hull and handles the sea well but takes some driving.

Regards Gary

Ill be out all summer and ill try and fit a 200+ mile leg in somewhere. Speed if the sea is calm is no probs but the chances of a flat sea all way to Iceland = 0 Im a bit unsure wheather ill be able to keep up good speed when it gets rough.

good on you guys... this sounds like a great run...

I am back up in the UK several times a year and I'd love to join in as crew (don't want to trailer the boat from Sydney) if the dates allow so pls keep me posted.

Great stuff!!
