I haven't been to Plymouth for the last 20 years or so. As far as I can remember we would probably need a taxi to get to the Marina (however I may be wrong). DOES ANY ONE KNOW!!!!

In any case transport will be OK (I think) as my wife, children (possibly will see how the weather is closer at the time) and Flankers partner will be driving down.
(They will charge extra for the warm bacon sandwiches and hot dogs though - coffee is free but there is charge for the suggar and milk LOLOL

)
They can be the taxi LOLOL

Seriously now I also think that some others will be towing their boats down so they can short of assit us in going to and from the marina.

Here is a link to Mayflower Marina.
The Marina is just above the word "ferry".
For your hotel address in prospect, use Multimap and you will see the distance from your chosen hotel to the marina.
In general, I would say you need to drive, however, two points:
First is that the marina office staff will call taxis for you, no bother, the taxi ranks are v. close. and,
Secondly, there should be enough people around with their own cars to help us. When organising the South-West Cruise and the Scillies Cruise out of Mayflower, I don't think anyone has had to call a taxi yet !

We stayed in a hotel just off the Hoe last year on the SW Cruise. Can't remember the name but recall it was fairly reasonable prices. It was nice to have everyone in the same spot from a social and organisational point of view. Brian, can you remember the name?

Er, no.
But, I have been looking around at the web and note that most places are going to be north of £70. This I think is too much.
There are two options.
One. I will go down to Plymouth one day next week and get details of 4 or 5 B&B type places that are together in the Hoe area. Each is likely to have only a few rooms, especially at that time of year, but at least we will all be in the same area.
The other option is to try to negotiate with a hotel like the Astor, who are on the Hoe, have lots of rooms but at the moment are maybe a little too pricey.

Whilst appreciating that budget is a serious consideration (for me as much as anyone else) a hotel with a bar for resisdents has a large amt. of appeal - even more so if we are all staying there!!!

I have no knowledge of plymouth, so i'll go with the flow!

I'd hazzard a guess of Sutton Harbour Marina (left bank) / Queen Anne's Battery Marina (right bank)

Queen Anne's Battery (QAB). Other marinas in Plymouth are Sutton Harbour (which is to the right and up off that picture) and Mayflower which is the other end of Plymouth just before Devonport. Unsure of costs/slipway access at QAB but we have used Mayflower for previous SW cruises. Brian used to keep his boat there so knows 'em all!

None of the marina's are in easy walking distance to hotels really as most hotels are located around the Hoe. However as pointed out those coming by road will have cars and there's also taxi's aplenty!

Another option would be to try and block book cabins at the Mountbatten Centre. (Devon CC watersports centre) and try and come up with some deal including launching and mooring. Depends how busy they are I guess.

I was trying to find out if you had any ideas for a destination - Falmouth, Salcombe, Looe, Eddystone, Weymouth etc?
I`ve spent 4 years in Plymouth and i like to try and get to somewhere different from my usual haunts!

The destination is Plymouth.

The idea being to have a meeting of members of this forum where we can gather and put faces to names and have a good time. Some like Charles will cross the channel by boat. Others such as myself Brian, Manos will be crusing down from the Torquay / Brixham area. Some may travel by road to Plymouth.

I have no doubt we will do a fair bit of boating while we are there to.

My understanding is that the Mountbatton center charges £25 a night B&B would have to check it though. Their is a bar and a pontoon could possible do them a deal to use them.

Thanks, but NO Thanks!! not disrespect but I will go for either the Holiday Inn or the Novotel (want to be able to sleep at night).

My student harsh years have ended loooong time ago and I like (when I can afford it) to have my comforts otherwise I do not do it.

As an ex employee of said establishment I have to agree!
It was good when it first openned but now it is dreadful. The original managment have all left in disgust. They cater only for divers and open events. If you fit into any of these categories take care they will take you to the cleaners.
(EG £200 to use the showers and £1 PER page to photocopy! They tell you this after you use them.)
Try the Copthrone Hotel for an average room or the Duke of Cornwall for somewhere a bit plush

Copthrone Hotel was also in mind but forgot to mention it.
The Mountbatton was not that brilliant when I was there (some 20 years ago!!).
And as I said why should I go somewhere and less comforts than I have at home and even worst pay for the inconvenience??
Any way I STONGLY suggest one of the three namely

COPTRONE
NOVOLTEL or
HOLIDAY INN

Hold on guys-don't panic Mr. Manos-wairing!!
I have spent most of the day scouting hotels etc. and Charles is in the last throws of doing a hotel deal for us.
PS Manos-the Holiday Inn, superb establishment that it, is want £128 today for a double and these prices ARE GOING UP!!
Think Charles has a much better deal fo us. Just hang on a second. Trust us.
