Isles of Scilly - weekend 28/29 July 2007

I am taking the family and 'Just Looking' to Cornwall for the last couple of weeks in July Wondered if anyone fancied a push to the Scilly Isles. Trip over, BBQ / picnic etc.

This is assuming there is going to be a summer at some stage

All quiet on the Western (or SW) front!

Ah well, looks like I'll have all of Cornwall to myself to cruise around . Given that we might just be cruising solo, does anyone have any top tips, places to go etc in the SW? Looking for nice beaches to anchor at, interesting views, places where dolphins, sharks etc 'hang out'.

Forgot to mention, saw a few of you in the Solent last week (had internet snags so couldn't post in advance ) when I was doing my PB intermediate course. I think I saw saw Merlin at Cowes (sorry I missed you Kath and Paul). I think I did most of the Solent in 2 days as a solo student with Tim at Griffin Marine - We went to Hamble, Beaulieu, Lymington, Newton and back to Cowes all in a Force 6 gusting 8 . Great course.

Thoughts on Cornwall cruising much appreciated.

Hi Steve
do a search for 'Falmouth' there's several threads detailing the Fal estuary and further afield. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Scillies cruise in the offing in August, those planned so far have been binned due to the weather.

Yeah, usually, at this time of year, we're looking for weather windows to just go for a Scillies trip when conditions favour. This year it's been so bad we've given up looking. Loads of cruising from Falmouth though, as Kerns says. For a day trip to the Scillies, you'd need to go from Penzance. It's close to 200Nm return from Falmouth.

Iam getting desperate to get there . I think if there is a weather window someone may have to wait a few days longer for their kitchen .

For cruising info for all the south west coast from Portland Bill to Scilly this is £20 well spent.
West Country Cruising Companion By Mark Fishwick.
I was given it for Christmas it is the best book I have ever read or seen fo this area.
Although written by a yatchsman it gives all the info you could wish for , from maps and chart info to the best places to eat find fuel etc etc even the estuaries and rivers are covered in detail and a good write up on history and interests of every place along the coast. There is a full list of all the VHFchanels and tel numbers for every port and its well ilustrated with superb photos and all the maps and charts . Even slipways are covered

far more interesting and usefull than any Almanac or pilot book

We'll be down that way during the same week (Mylor)
If weather is kind we are up for the scillies but would tow to PZ
Long range forecast doesn't look good

Yep top book that one..

Weather is some what strange at present. Crewed with Sticky RIB today for a nice trip from PZ down to Porthcurno.

Got wet from the rain and ended up sun burnt

Shaggy "Weather is some what strange at present."

Forecast can't be relied upon for sure . Better off looking west and sticking a wet finger in the air
