Quick update on this thread. A very interesting hour or so was spent with the Coastguard and a quick couple of photos taken for the benefit of ribnet members to have a go at guessing who's who.
A more detailed summary of their gadgets and gizmos will follow.

I thought the visit was great; the guy who showed us round was really nice and knew his stuff. Here's the link to the marina in Le Havre. It has a fuel berth and several garages close by. I'll ring the office and find out what time the pumps are open and how we can pay.

Thanks to Matt for organising this, very informative indeed! Quite a few surprises, things they can/do do that I didn't expect and a few things they don't.
The theme that ran right trough the visit was traffic reports, I have always thought filing them was a good idea but to hear first hand that they prefer to know and how they treat the info was really good.
