As for dates, I can do 1/2nd August. I fancy a trip up to Lulworth and some of the other good spots en route and some beach anchoring, maybe a BBQ and an overnighter (poss camping) all subject to the weather......

How many can comit to weekend 1-2 August ?
Will check with Mrs & kids & look at tides to get out of Christchurch Harbour (and back in) - I guess Weymouth is the closest petrol station after Poole.

Edit - tides look OK to get out of Christchuch mid morning Sat & back in an hour later on Sunday. JUst the hard bit of convincing Mrs now ( and of course praying for nice weather) .

Any suggestion of where you can get to beach that you can BBQ on ? Or that you can camp on ?

The only petrol in Weymouth is by cans and is a bit of a trek, although quayside diesel is available. The new marina at Portland which opened on 1 April is due to have quayside petrol and diesel but I'm not sure that those facilities are available yet. A phone call will doubtless clarify. Your tank should easily hold enough to get you there from Christchurch and back however.

Camping on the beaches along the Jurassic coast is not officially allowed and with all suitable spots being well visited it would be difficult to get away with it.

I'm glad of your confidence David - but my poor old 2 stroke does get through the gas & with I think a max usable at the mo of 120L - I'd hate to 'stop' just off Bournemouth pier ! I can stick another 75 in the cans & strap it down somehow !

However it may be that it could be a more of day trip as by the sound of it camping may be hard to arrange close to the beach (thinking for boat safety) ? I know that people often camp on Hengistbury beach , but past that its all a bit 'serious' on the nature side so may not take kindly to a load of us pitching up ?

At the moment the 1/2nd works for us. If camping on beach looks difficult, there are a few camp sites at cliff top locations that might work.

A trip from the solent to weymouth area and back is doable in a "long" day.

But Christchurch - Weymouth is less than 35M! Surely you can do a round trip of 70M on 120l with a reserve of 75l? (And petrol is available in Poole if you need it).

That'll make a cross Channel trip difficult, then!

Indeed - though at that LPH I am around 45-50knts, so covering the ground quite well. Fuel consumption is one thing I will admit to being paranoid about - a hangover from flying I think.

I was taught NEVER trust the gauges - but as I cant see the boat tank , or stick a bit of wood in it I am having to over come it! Though knowing I run out at 120 L ( having done it) is helpfull. Add another 75L in cans & I should just make it ( only just in my mind ! )

Just checked, and they now have petrol available.

OK, so looks like beach camping is maybe not possible.
But, if it were, it would have to be July 25/26 or August 8/9 (assuming we would want low water over night to allow beaching or ribs for security)
Portland tides July 25/26 HW 2201 2.3m, LW 0308 0.2m, HW 1032 2.0m
Portland tides August 8/9 HW 2111 2.1m, LW 0219 0.3m, HW 0934 1.9m

All dates now clear and possible. I guess you might want to stay flexible dependent on weather.

In a typical weekend I think Portland would be good for a stop over, 1) they now have fuel available and 2) you can camp on the beaches on the inside of the harbour, as many watersports guys do every weekend. One or two pubs on the waterside too.

It would then give the option of going around the headland and to Chesil Beach on one of the days, although Chesil then goes on for some time with little change, so would probably not want to go much further West.

A lunch stop over in Lulworth is well worth it for the views and again a couple of good pubs.

Between the water and the road to the south of the bridge and the boat yard. I would urge one note of caution, I have not been around to have a look since the new olympic facilities were finished, so they may have clamped down a bit in order to keep the image up!

Could do with a little help from any "locals" for feedback or to check out. Anyone out there .....

Try contacting BlueWater boatyard on the causeway they may be able to help. http://www.blue-horizons.co.uk/crownline-moorings.htm

My cousin lives on Portland, I'll ask if he knows about camping.

Mark,

I can do any of them currently, so do not mind, but it's a chicken and egg situation.
If people want to camp, with boats beached for security, 1/2nd August makes no sense. If people want to stay in B&Bs or on their RIBS on a mooring if they are able, 1/2nd is possible.

I checked with Portland today, and was sternly told camping on the beach is not allowed, but to try Weymouth beach!

Summary of when people can do (if I read posts correctly):-
Andy Moore ????
Me - all 3 weekends
Blackroady - all 3 weekends (even 1/2 I think)
250kts - all 3 weekends
hatt11 1/2nd August
mark241 1/2nd August
treerat ????
malthouse ????
ColinF ????
mattH ????
Mick Balch ????
