Plymouth to Looe Pasty Run 2015

We're down in Plymouth this weekend for the Yealm Passage Race with 3, possibly 4 boats so give us a wave if you see us. We're launching at QAB.

Hmm latest forecast: overcast, light rain, F3 rising to F4 SW-S and heavier rain by 1600.
Still, it was tipping down with rain when we started last year!

I live in the area and the forecast has been different every day this week from what they said the day before. Probably change again tomorrow!!

If we leave at 1300 then around 1345, looking at a bit of a diversion to avoid the lumpy shoal just on the East side so 1400 ish I suspect.

Worked last year!!

However going to try and avoid Sherberry Shoal this year as it threw up some interesting waves last year - if you can plot the last bit to avoid the worse it'll help.

I'd stick some stuff in to your plotter.....

Treerat took us through the lumpiest seas he could find over the shallows at around Sherberry Rocks / Errant Patch last year then wondered why it had got a bit bouncy!

Seriously though, your navigation & route is your responsibility, so I'd plot a route - good practice even if visibility is good and we all keep together (although not too close): blindly following others isn't the best plan.....doing it with at least one eye open is better

Apart from the darker blue and green bits

As Treerat says, we intend to cut South around Shertberry Rocks / Errant Patch this year - that blue bit a couple of miles East of Looe.

There's no danger or lack of water, just an awkward chop caused by the shallower water that was a bit uncomfortable in a shorter hull

May I suggest we use Channel 08 for comms on the run?

Local conditions will mean sun & slight sea
Should be launching Mountbatten c.1100.

So how did the 2015 Pasty run go? Well the pasties were great, and lots of them this year but the trip over certainly shook the cobwebs out.

We launched at Saltash as planned, meeting up with another rib on the slip - that had also driven down from North Devon, tempted by the call of a pasty.

A safe and all working launch followed by a blast in the Sound and the pair of us ventured into Bovisand harbor for a mug of tea and use of the rest rooms and we were joined by our smallest vessel for the trip. 30 minutes of sitting in the sun, enjoying the tea and watching the world go by and it was time to head off to the fort for the jump off.

Coats were duly pulled out (didn't need them on the run down the river) and we were pleasantly surprised to see another 2 ribs and a hard boat waiting for us. Within the next 10 minutes a further 3 ribs arrived and we were a fleet of 9

Once we headed out away from the breakwater things changed - oh did they change. It was lovely inside the wall, plenty of flat water, very little noticeable wind and all nine boats were carving the water at around 25kns.

Once the protection of the headland and wall was behind the sea took on a mind of its own. The swell seemed to come from all angles - including the rear! Waves were negotiated, jumped and at times enjoyed. Squeals of delight and screams of fear were heard - and that was just from Ian in his big toy!!

Due to the size of the waves we lost our smallest boat and the boat with the smallest people - a good call to enjoy the Sound was made.

Part way we lost our largest boat who decided that tea was preferable to a pasty but the rest of us ploughed on.

An hour after leaving Plymouth we made the entrance to Looe, a whole 14nm away, the sun was out and the area full of dingy sailors and kids crabbing.

The 6 of us that were left met up with yet another member on the run in and 7 of us moored up and headed into town for a great Pasty, well some of us did - 2 boats decided liquid was preferable to meat!!

After an hour ashore it was time to head back, we left the local boat behind, and left two moored up in Looe for a later run back and the 4 of us had a much smoother journey home with the wind and swell behind us taking only 35 minutes compared to the hour on the way out.

All in all a hard trip compared to last year but great company, good pasties and much enjoyment made the trip worth while.

Well done to those intrepid souls who battled to Looe and back today.

Unfortunately the girls found the seas past Penlee Point too challenging, so discretion was the better part of valour for us, especially when I was anticipating the seas would be building as the wind rose in the afternoon.

Anyway after cuppa and burger at Bovisands we had a good afternoon in the Sound and exploring up the Tamar past the Dockyard.

Great to meet up with some old friends and meet some new ones.
