I was wondering about whether to use Mountbatten or Saltash.
I'll be coming off the A38 from the east.
Is there difference in cost / parking / ease of use?

In my opinion (if you are coming from the A38) you should go to Mountbatten. There is an all states of the tide (wide) slip with plenty of turning. If you launch in Saltash you will have a 15-20 minute cruise each way to get to/from Plymouth sound. At Mountbatten you are there. Have a look at street view.
There is plenty of free parking but you can also park in the Mountbatten centre for £10 (total). I think you can also use their showers afterwards (and use the club house)

It's the Western edge of Plymstock - where the Plym runs into the Sound, if that makes sense. Yuo can find it on boatlaunch. It puts you right onto the eastern side of the Sound, and as JeffD says it''ll save 20min or so each way to / from Saltash.
I think it's where we'll launch from on the day.

This is the Mountbatten centre http://www.mount-batten-centre.com/day-users/4566819016 where for £5/10 you can park your car/trailer and use their showers.
Pl9 9SA is the public slip next to it. If you park your cars at the centre they may let you use their pontoons to load/unload. If not there is plenty of free parking.
Pl9 7bh is a Morrisons with a petrol station if you want to fill up cans as you get close.
PL4 0LP is a 2 minute cruise across from Mountbatten where you can refuel at Queen Anne's Marina fuel Barge.

I use Oreston slip a lot, its fine. Its also just been pressure washed so is clean, free parking, easy fuel within 2 mins. If parking is extremely busy maybe the local Yacht Haven Quay could offer to store the cars etc (Ian Austin would have more leverage on that than me).
Saltash has plenty of space plus two slips within seconds of each other. The Mount batten one is good but it does mean a little more of a trek getting to it by car, passing Oreston in the process
I'm lost on the LOOE front... We could always launch/recover there instead

Yeah they have a small pontoon next to the petrol station so you can tie up and fill up, but you have to fill up via Jerry cans! i have a few so no worries if you need fuel. Garage is always open!

FYI re mooring I emailed the harbourmaster and received this reply.
Hi Jeff
The normal charge for visiting boats is £15.00 but if you are only popping
in for a short time I tend not to charge if there is no problems.

I've always found that for "short stay" normally an hour or so, harbours don't charge for tying up - providing you ask nicely on the way in, or are Devon Harbour Masters just kind? Usually spend a few (quite a few with 4 of us) quid on coffee / lunch etc... whilst there

High tide is late at 1620 ish but hopefully they'll be enough water to get into the harbour if we leave Plymouth at 12 and bimble over.
Launching will be from Oreston or Saltash depending on where you're coming in from - I'll be aiming for Saltash. Then meet up at Bovisands at 12, can get a cuppa or bacon sandwich whilst waiting, watch out for the dive boats then head off.
So far I think we have;
1. Andy (Treerat) on Nutkin
2. Ian A
3. Pete (Boats and outboards)
Feel free to add your boat / name to the list

Hey guys,
My tide tables say high water at Looe on Sat. 30th March is 1950 hrs and low water, 1350 hrs. As it will be springs I estimate the earliest we will be able to enter is 1630 hrs. Do you agree and if so , what are we going to do for 4.5 hrs? Is it Treerat's tables or mine that are wrong?
