Poole to Cherbourg in September.
Hi,
On my bucket list for this year is a trip to Cherbourg from Poole.
This would be my first trip in this Rib (ribeye a600) so would like to go in company.
Leave early on a Saturday, cruise across at 20-25knts and have a big bowl of modules frites and a few beers for dinner. Stay over in the b&b near the marina and head back mid morning the next day.
I am hoping to go mid to late September. Dates flexible depending on weather.
Anyone fancy coming along, or have any tips if been before?
Andy

When u say first trip in Rib, is that because it is new to you? In which case has it been serviced. Also I would recommend a blast out in it first locally so if there are any issues with it at least your on home turf and not in the middle of the channel.

We did this last year, there's a hotel next to the marina
You'll be fine in a 6m ribeye. Just keep an eye on the weather.
Not going the Cherbourg this year but I'd go back to Alderney if I get time.

Also have you advised your insurance company and are you covered? Some won't entertain a trip on your own and are a bit more relaxed if you are going with other boats

I cracked a tooth on one o' them modules, hard b'stards they are.
The hotel Les Anglais is just a couple of minutes walk from the marina & very reasonable.
"La Pizza" is a good place to eat, it's by the main bridge on the west side of the harbour.
The " El Dorado" pub & micro brewery is worth a visit if you want a change from the usual eurofizz, & is more or less across the road from the Hotel Les Anglais.
Cite de la Mer is worth a visit.
I'd give it a minute though before you set off, it's minging out here at the mo. The sun is out, but the wind is relentless from the west.

Hi AJ,
The boat is not new to me but it would be the first time I cross the channel in it. I used to go across on other boats from Ramsgate to Calais, but not done the crossing with me as skipper on my boat Poole to Cherbourg. Good point on the insurance, I will check.
Hi Trimix,
it would be great to have you as company. I'll start to get some possible dates sorted and hope the weather plays ball

Hi I did it last year too in the same rib, told my insurance and they were happy but they needed to be told to be covered.
I would not do it again if the weather was not very settled, going out was fun with a very big swell but coming home was 5 hours of hell with very confused chop coming in from every direction, not fun at all!
We stayed here HĂ´tel Cherbourg - HĂ´tel Chantereyne sur le port de plaisance Ă* Cherbourg, hĂ´tel avec vue sur Marina which is very covenant as it overlooks the marina.
+1 for the "El Dorado" pub they do a great platter of 5 beers on a wooden tray

Hi Andy,
Im cool with dates as Im flexible timewise. I read the report from last years trip which was done in bumpy weather with interest. So waiting till its good / OK is fine with me.
Also if you wanted to go any other time at short notice Im up for it. Pretty much any weekend / Friday-Monday is fine with me.
Ive been looking at distances / times and fuel consumption with this trip in mind and was planning on going soon, so your thread is well timed as obviously its better to go with another RIB.
If you fancy a pre-trip meet to sort out / try out stuff let me know. Im still experimenting with kit / RIB and stuff.

Go as crew and help with the fuel costs! That's what I did last year, I even assisted in a "kind" of rescue mid channel

I could well have space as Ive four suspension seats on the RIB. One for me and then three for crew. Ive a few mates who are interested but actually getting them to commit is another thing. (like herding cats)
If you, or anyone else, fancys joining me let me know and I will try to firm up crew numbers.

I'm interested in joining you on this cruise. We went to Alderney earlier this year with two other boats and whilst it was rough on the way there we enjoyed it and would love to make France - keep me posted on dates

bonjour, this is looking like a few are interested which is great.
Trimix, good idea to try and meet up prior. I will be out I the country now until sept 6th but hopefully we can arrange a time after that. Don't forget to get your boat SSR part3 registered if it is not already.
Alex, looks like there will be space, I may also have a space but if your boat can reach 20-25 knots no reason why you would not make it across as I want to cruise not race :-)
Cgf10, will keep you posted as it may be short notice depending on weather windows.
Can't wait.
Andy

Hi Andy,
I am registered already, so should be OK. I will get all the docs laminated and kept on the RIB.
(Ive been getting ready for Corsica, but apart from that and a passport I assume all I need is insurance, proof of ownership and an ICC)
When your back drop me an email and we can meet up.
I will be out this weekend trying out my plotter which is now connected to the engines, so I can see how much fuel Ive left. Also will be practicing steering just by compass or plotter or wishfull thinking. As opposed to following everyone else.
Cheers for now.

Thanks chaps! Come to think of it I think my passport has expired icc not a problem. Flares may be out of date however, I hear you can get a pretty hefty fine for having t.e.p's on board ?!

If this happens after the 14th, I would be happy to crew, helm, bale or make tea.
Regards
