Quick point about ATIS, common practise for foreigners seems to be to get registered for it with Ofcom so you've got paperwork for it (we know how they like paperwork over there) but not to have your radio actually set up for it.

Personally I didn't like the idea of sending my radio away and paying to have it modified, then broadcasting weird noises every time I spoke for the rest of the life of the radio. And since I intend to avoid vhf conversations with frenchmen as much if not more than dead floating cows in the river, I think I'll be taking this option

I think once your radio is programmed for ATIS it becomes an option on the menu which you can turn on or off, depending upon whether you're in France or not.

I think this is correct for most radios. It appears alongside US & International as a further option. Remember ATIS isn't just the identification message, it also sets the radio to low power on all the relevant frequencies. So you wouldn't want it on the whole time.

I had a look at this when I decided to buy one of the new Standard Horizon DSC portables. It's a nice piece of kit but when it says it is ATIS equipped, it's a bit of a misnomer because under ATIS, portables can only be used for ship to ship communications. This means that the normal channels for communicating with lockkeepers etc aren't activated under ATIS on a portable. Not much help then since I don't find intership communication a big issue on my boat

That's useful to know and very pertinent. I was seriously considering a handheld with ATIS to avoid pulling out my fixed mount to send it away.
