RNLI Fundraiser, upper Clyde - Saturday 25 August 2007
We are members & keen supporters of the RNLI. I was trying to think of ways to raise money locally, and came up with the idea of visiting all the RNLI inshore lifeboat stations on the upper clyde in one day, during the summer.
There are 4 stations: Largs, Lamlash, Tighnabruich & Rhu. It would be an all day trip, and I estimate roughly 4-5 hours on passage, if done as a circuit.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone thought this was a good idea, and would be interested in taking part. If you pick a good day, the scenery is absolutely stunning!
Weather would be the main consideration. Not much fun trying to do this in the rough, especially getting accross to Arran, which could mean short notive cancellation.
What about the last Saturday in August?

You rang?
And don't call me shortly!
Last Saturday in August, you say? That's the 25th. Marks made on wall accordingly - pencil for now.
Charts now strewn everywhere in anticipation...

Cheers for your replies....forgot the open day at Largs.... Doh!
I think Saturday 25th August would be the date, unless it's blowing a gale!
I had intended heading out from Largs 1st, over to Lamlash, then up to Tighnabruich, rhu and back to Largs. Anyone would be welcome to do the whole thing, or some of it.
I'll try to upload my poor attempt at a sponsorship form to the site in a couple of days.....
Seeing as the RNLI didn't get back to me, it might be best to try to get sponsorship/ donations individually, and then forward any directly to them, on an individual basis. At some point, we can see how much has been raised.
Will try to keep an eye on the weather nearer the time. Being realistic, anything above a F4, or rain/ cold, could change it from a good day, into a not so good day, particularly if any sprogs come along, given the open water.
Anyone wanting to get involved is doing so at their own risk, and should make sure they're fully equipted, and their boat is up to it, etc etc....lecture over!
Cheers

Hi...
Tried to upload the sponsor form, but it is in a word doc format and won't upload.....all I did was get a logo off the net, create a simple word document with a table on, outlining the date, and usual sponsor form type stuff....
It took about two minutes to do, and should be easy for anyone to do similar. If you want the one I've done, send me a private message, and I'll see if it works that way.
I would anticipate trying to set out from largs marina about 0900hrs, and aim to be at Lamlash by about 1030hrs.
Thereafter, on to Tighnabruich between midday and 1300hrs, a suitable stop for lunch somewhere, and up to rhu for about 1530hrs, then back down to Largs ILB Station to finish.
As previously mentioned, I think the weather will play a big part. If it's good, then great stuff.......if not, I don't see much fun in battling the elements. It can always be put off until a good day.
My initial thoughts in this were to get some boats together, for a fun day out, relaxing cruise, and maybe raise some money for a good cause along the way.
Cheers

Hi.
The date is confirmed as Sat 25th Aug. Will be floating out of Largs Marina just after 9am.....so get your boats in early! (or the night before).
Have already managed to pester a few folks for sponsorship.
Will be offline now until the 24th Aug.
******Will check the weather on the 24th, and confirm if it looks ok that evening via this forum*********.
We fully intend to go ahead unless it's a howling gale or tipping down with rain. Anything is possible!
Aim to be at Lamlash about 1030ish, to pick up the Grocer... Then up to Tighnabuich for lunch, then Rhu, then back to Largs.
Be aware, there are limited fuel stops between Brodick and Rothesay, i.e. up the west side of Bute.
Hope to see you all then..
Cheers

One or both of us will be there/here/somewhere; minor staffing problem* but Mrs. Grocer has had a Cunning Plan...
*Damned inconsiderate, I call it.
Going on holiday. In summer. I ask you. I'm too flipping good to them. Next year, no-one has any holidays. At all! (except me, and of course Mrs. G. )

Dang me!
Well so it is.
Met forecast looks not unpleasant at the moment, but who knows...
...anyway, Mrs. G. sanctioned the purchase of a pair of shiny new Geckos.
She is pleased that she no longer suffers from cabriolet hair or weepy eyes, but is not wholly approving of the flat-top hair style.
What this inconsequential drivelling means is that, unless a minor problem should crop up (e.g. earth-asteroid interface) we intend to participate in this watery wandering.
We have a selection of waypoints which may be of some use; but they don't cover the entire route. More homework needed, perhaps? ("I left it on the bus/the dog ate it/my kid brother smoked it" - select as appropriate)

lost in the cause!
sorry to put a damper on this, but if this is to raise money for the RNLI would it not be better go a a smaller cruise and use less fuel, then donate the saving rather than give most of your money to the goverment?
