Round IOW Predicted Log

Some of you maybe aware that I recently became a member of the Royal Southern Yacht Club motorboat/RIB committee . It is not a stuffy club like it sometimes can appear from the outside.

Every year for the last three years we have held a Rib event which is sponsored by Barrus and this year it will be held on September 11th. This event like every year is an open event so it is not just restricted to members.

Below is what we plan to do this year:

'This years event seeks to test rib driving skills combined with navigational accuracy. The course will be set from the start line off the River Hamble and circumnavigating the Isle of Wight and stopping for lunch at the Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth. Competitors must state in advance their cruising speed and predict their finishing time. All clocks, watches and navigational instruments with the exception of magnetic compasses, echo sounders and engine instruments must be covered or removed. The winner will be the Rib completing the course with the minimum error compared to their predicted time. Following lunch all entrants will return to the Royal Southern YC for the prizegiving'

As I have already mentioned the event is sponsored by Barrus and they very generously donate vouchers . 1st Price is £250, 2nd Prize is £150 and 3rd prize is £100. It is always a good day out and there is an entry fee of only £20 (the entry fee does not cover lunch).

If that sounds like something you would enjoy and would like to book yourself in please say so on this thread and email sailing@royal-southern.co.uk where a form can be sent to you. If you have any questions please post or pm me and I will try to help. Entries need to be in by 4 September at the latest.

It is a great day out and it would brilliant if some of the ribsters here can come and show how it is done.

Many thanks

Martin

Hi Martin,

This sounds like a lorra, lorra fun and my recollection of lunch at the Royal Solent was that the grub was EXCELLENT.

I'd like to register an interest but I'm not able to commit at this stage because I've a longstanding arrangement on that day to take out a family who have no experience at all.

I have discussed it briefly with them and they are happy to leave it to my better judgement (!!) but it would be unfair of me to sign them up for this if conditions are a little daunting.

Can I let you know via this medium on Friday 3rd September ?

Doesn't help at all with the planning I know, but I'm keen to go, given a favourable weather outlook. In which case, we'd be seven.

Brian

It would be good if you could come along. I am sure the new crew would be fine, if the conditions are deemed just too rough we have a Solent course up our sleeves.

I look forward to hearing from on the 3rd.

Hi Martin,

I've sent the email to Royal Southern and would like to be included in this event, please.

Next week looks to be Easterlies. Let's hope it settles down nicely for the Saturday.

Blimey, Brian, everyone has the right to take a small risk in their lives but this family is overdoing it a bit aren't they?

Looking forward to it. Nice to see a straight forward passage plan in your file.

All to well known big buoys

all anyone needs is a compass and even thats not really needed as they are BIG buoys.

you could have made ut a little harder - maybe blindfold the driver

So in summary

around the IOW estimate your journey time and drink beer afterwards
