Round the Island race

Taking delivery of my new Ribcraft 5.85 next week and am planning to follow the Round the Island race at the end of June. Can anyone recommend a good slip in the Solent area (75%+ tidal range use) with car and trailer parking? Sailed many times in the Solent, but only from marinas. Ta!!

I use the slip at Hythe Marina most of the time. There is loads of parking and they have CCTV and security guards so the trailer and car are pretty safe. Parking for the car and trailer will cost you £10 for the day - use of the slip is free.

The slip on Bath Road, Lymington is pretty good. Its quite steep but there’s a huge car park.

Camber Docks in Portsmouth is also good. I have never launched there personally but watched other RIBnet members recover from it.

Solent Launching

Hi,

Try Calshot Activity Centre. £11 to park and launch. Launch at all states of tide. Very good & wide slip (used to launch sea boats) & if you don't mind the car getting wet you don't need to unhitch. Toilets, showers, cafe and bar on site. Easy access straight across to Cowes. Only limitation is no adjacent pontoon so you can't launch single handed (but why would you want to!) Email me or look on boatlaunch for directions.

I'm also planning to follow the race but with 'only' 75hp I think I'll potter along!!

Good luck.

I've used HMS Daedalus at Lee on Solent loads of times in the last couple of years (though not this year yet). It is concrete and useable at almost all states of tide. There is free parking at the top of the slip and at the roadside. It can get busy with jetski launches but when that happens there's often a helpful bloke with a towbar on the front of his little 4X4 who offers free launch and recovery. I like it so much I even buy him a drink!
