#3 That weekend was the world chaps for gig racing in the Scillies. To the uneducated it comprised of very 'fit' woman rowing a very heavy boat over a long distance. Once they did that round 2 was at the Mermaid pub where they drink like demons and sing very rude songs.

I may be incorrect that round 2 was part of gig racing but it seemed like that to me !

A big thankyou to Brian for organising the event.

Our trip back ( 200nm ) was fairly uneventful and was completed in 6 hours. Off Start Point the following see got a little bigger and we managed to break the windscreen when we went through a wave !!

Cheers

Mark

Little known fact!

I was the first cox of the Salcombe gig (mens, ladies, mixed and junior teams!) and those girls can drink!

As it was our first year we didn't go to the Scillies but I still know a lot of the crew and it's quite a party and serious competition as well - don't let anyone tell you girls arn't competitive cos they are in a gig! (and in the bar!)

Cookee can cox as that involves being light and shouting, but if you want a real laugh you should see him row
I have rowed in the mens and coxed for the ladies at the world champs, there is only one word to describe that weekend on the islands, magical.
This is us comming into the harbour, we'd just caught a wave and been slowed allowing wasp to come past, but Graham the cox shortened the stoke and upped the rate and we beat them to the line winning that heat, put us about 35th I think.

RIBase
Behavin,
It would have been real nice to make your aquaintance whilst there. Sorry we missed you.

We WERE lucky with the weather and I am glad evryone enjoyed the trip. Full writeup in the next issue of Riblines.

Meanwhile here is a "not very good shot" of Maen-A-Vaur, a "island" split right through the middle. Only our good friends on "Scorch" though managed to get right the way through to the other side however!

Also another shot from my favourite pub, The Turk's Head on St. Agnes

Here is a better pic of "Scorch" inside "Maen-A-Vaur".

We also tried to go through the gap, but hit the side and dented the prop

Do you recognise where it is Behavin?

The other pictures look superb. Sounds/looks like a great trip.

Looks like a couple of ribbists in the foreground too!

hi again yeah the scillywebcam pic is just north of Popplestones on the west side of Bryher. Its where Hellbay is.
The gap in men-a-vaur is the beginners one next time try the gap in Scilly Rock????
I was the yellow (ughh) Delta dash marshalling gig races i did talk briefly with the red bay owner as our freight company is getting a 8.7m red bay in 6-7 months for mail/freight handling.
glad you enjoy scilly.
all the best
pete
