Scilly Isles Cruise June 7/8/9 2003

Is it too early to mention this cruise?

On behalf of BIBOA, I have been asked to organise this years outing to the Scilly Isles.
Last years cruise, memorable for it’s “interesting” seas was too short at two days in total.
By the time we reached Hugh Town on St. Mary’s, it was already late afternoon, and as we then had to leave the next morning sharp at 9 am, there really was no time to explore these attractive islands.

So this year we are looking at a three day event, from Saturday the 7th June through to Monday the 9th (it’s NOT a Bank Holiday weekend).

I am looking for expressions of interest at this stage and also any “requests” that you might have so that I can put together a trip of interest to as many as possible.

There is a long, previous thread on the Scillies from 2002 on this Forum for those who want a bit more background and some more facts and opinions. Essentially, it is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to make their first “offshore” cruise, but in safe company!

Can't come Brian but we had a fortnight their last year on our first "serious" solo trip. It's a Ribster's paradise!!
If anybody would like to borrow them, I have a full set of Admiralty charts.......as long as I get them back!!

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately I am unable to make those dates, however I will say that I really enjoyed last years cruise. The Scilly Isles are a wonderful place to visit.

I intend to revisit there again some time and will plan to stay for more time. For information the Garrison Campsite is also top class.

I will be back on the Helford River for my annual two week holiday at the begining of July.
Being a Local can you recommend to me some good restaurants in the Falmouth Area please.

Thanks and have a good trip.

P.S. I have started to put my website together, I have added the scans of the pictures you sent me. Please browse at your leisure!!

Right. So we have:
Myself and Cyanide
Mark Wildey
Martin Stacey
Mike Carson
Mike and Di Garside
Ageing Youth-Yes, your boat is more than adequate, and it really isn't that far offshore. It just feels like it the first time you go there! To give you a clue, on a reasonable day, you can see the cliffs at Lands End from the Scillies.
Any more for any more. And then I will start to get down to an itinerary.

...........and maybe Jools!

Graeme Cooper with Sian on Topaz (Avon 6.2m 130 Honda) have now joined the list.
Ageing Youth
Another factet I have just remembered is (in trying to assure you that it's not that far really) is this.
One morning my hotel breakfast waitress said "The girls are back".
Pardon?
"Yes, one the girls pilot gig teams set out after closing time last night to row over to Sennen Cove on the mainland. They have just come back".

Blimey, AY, best not give the local lasses an argument then!

We will probably do what we did last year. That is we had a sort of rolling convoy.
I started from Torquay, Andy Mickelwrights started from Brixham we met up with others at Plymouth, Falmouth, Lizard and the Wolf Rock lighthouse.
We then went over to the islands as a group arriving mid-afternoon.
Worked like a dream last year because everybody arrived at their RV point exactly on time. Good fun getting that right!
So you can pick your own launch site as long as you coordinate with the group and stick to the schedule..

Jason, you really need to ask Toby Budd who is a regular on the forum. He runs/ran Ocean Aqua Cab in the area and knows it like the back of his hand.

However, fom personal experience I can recommend two...

The Sticky Prawn in Flushing - 01326 270852 and..

The Victory Inn in St Mawes - 01326 270324.

Both excellent sea-food places to eat.

Cheers

Ok thats sounds like a good idea to me. So your going to do the whole trip in one hit is that right. I will have a word with my crew mate and see what he says.

I anticipate one of our famous “rolling starts” to this years outing to the Scillies. I believe Mark and Julian will be coming the furthest, down from Lymington. We will collect various others on our way, and proceed via the Lizard, Wolf Rock Lighthouse and, eventually St. Mary’s Sound, to the south of the main island, and then into Hugh Town. We will probably arrive mid-late afternoon. I suggest the rest of the day is spent booking in, sorting out and paying for moorings (no water taxi) and completing any refuelling arrangements.
On Sunday morning we will go clockwise round St. Mary’s, down to Gugh, up the Gugh/St Agnes Sound for a “look-see” then continuing clockwise round St. Agnes and into The Turks Head for lunch. Then off to Annett (puffin island), Bishops Rock lighthouse and weather permitting the “Atlantic” sea run up to The Maiden Bower, Round Island light and carefully down to the hotel on St. Martins for tiffin. A careful run back down between St. Martins and Tresco, should bring us intact back to Hugh Town for din-dins.
Monday, off up to the Eastern Isles and the Hanjague Rock for some seal spotting and finally heading east back towards the Runnel Stone at Lands End and Blighty.
I will prepare a spreadsheet routing but such is the nature of the islands it is best to normally follow in close line-astern in most places.

IT IS VITAL YOU MAKE ACC. BOOKINGS ASAP

I have “promises” from the following:

Me
Mike Garside
Julian
Mark Wildey
Mike Carson
Martin Stacey
Kevin (Ageing youth)
Jools
Graeme Cooper

Feedback please chaps!
