Scottish SIB run 2018 Largs Arran & Bute 23/24 June

Hi folks planning the Scottish sib outing for next year leaving Largs up round Arron round the sound of bute weather permitting look forward to seeing the crue from last year and a few more hope this is ok with folks HH

Looking forward to it already!!! Much planning to be done. Last time I left Largs yacht haven was in a thirty foot sailboat... Nearly over boarded with the spinnaker. Sh1t4brains will be sorted better than she was in Oban.

With H Haggis’s permission ..I can add this map showing the route ..which may assist those not familiar with the area.

Total distance is approx 100 land miles. Overnight camp will probably be on Kintyre as Arran is not the best places for landing and camping..due to the terrain and long sea dykes extending from its southern end



The poor weather option will be similar in nature to the last Ribnet SIB outing in the Clyde 2016 ..We went round the Kyles of Bute from Largs ..then into Loch Fyne as it was more sheltered than crossing to Arran in a Force 4-5.

Will be using a 4.3 sub with a 25 2stoke on this trip, has anyone got a vague idea of how much fuel I should Take? 👍🙄

gurnard will tell as he has a 4.2m with a 25 hp mariner

Lots! It’s further than we’ve ever been on a sub outing before so I think I will be in the 40-50L range (of fuel burned) bearing in mind the boat is quite laden with kit etc. I expect you will be similar. If I need to carry 20L as a contingency then it might start to get a bit silly so will be worth looking at where the options are for refuelling.

Sounds much the same set up that I have Chrissybabe. Mine is a 25hp Mariner two stroke from 2005 and the boat is a heavy wooden floor 4.3 SIB. I know from experience and the way I drive mine ..mostly on ¾ throttle ..I use approx 5 litres of fuel for every 10 miles. Therefore I will use approx 50 (just a little less 45 ?) litres for the hundred mile trip. Its always recommended to carry 1/3 more for unforeseen issues ..therefore I will be taking around 60-65 litres.

I do envy the 4 stroke guys with their 20 hp outboards as their figures are generally half mine. Im sure those guys will assist with their own experience from previous trips for other four stroke participants.

Highland Haggis is planning it so Im sure he will look into places to refuel en route if that is an option and keep you informed

Yup..its been planned as a good weather route Poly.

Last year we covered 95 miles going up the Sound of Mull into Loch Sunart and back..so similar distance. It was good conditions. I also did one in September with others guys that covered 75 miles in one day.. everyone really enjoyed it and no one complained it was too long

The bad weather route ..you will be familiar with ..but it was still very enjoyable although a very wet trip

Perhaps this is not the place to mention it as its a different outing but Myself and three other Sibs are going round Mull on the weekend of 20th May. Leaving Thursday evening from Ganavan Sands .. returning on the Sunday.. I will mention it nearer the time if anyone is interested in these type of trips

In my 3.9 plastic bathtub with a 20hp 4stroke, I would plan to carry 50 and expect to use 35litres.

People talking about a sub run rather than a Sib run? Is this a dig at the way my boat was stuffing so badly this year or is there something I should know? About loch long or about a new style of small submersible? ��

I suspect its just the way some folk speak Stevie ?.. Subs and Arron are not in my native dialect ..Im more a “the half croon rolled doon the hull” or “erra per oh lovely pers ower err on that wummin” ..kind of chap.

I guess auto type doesn’t help much either. However as long as we can share a love of adventures.. I don’t mind how folks speak. It will be good to see you again too.
