Searider Gathering, Sat 20th September.
Finally decided on dates and location for this.
Saturday 20th September or as a reserve depending on weather Sunday 21st September.
After much deliberation and a chat to Doggypaddle we've decided to do this in the Solent.
Meet up at the Lightship around 10.30 then (weather depending) run round to Ventnor for lunch or the Folly if it's too rough to go round the back of the island.
Everyone's welcome but it'd be nice to get as many Seariders in one place as possible.
Sound good?

I will be there, Its a shame we decided against ramsgate and the forts, but given the current weather situation I think we made the right choice. The next searider only gathering will have to be the forts, in the sunny spring perhaps?
when its flat and sunny like it always is......

Does anyone have tide times for Ventnor for those days?

Dosen't really matter too much what the tide is doing as I expect the Harbour Master will have you tie up on the Moorings outside the Harbour and ferry you in by SIB.

The only time I've been into Ventnor, Biggles,Steve and I had to walk his boat out over the bar.

I'm just saying that it doesn't matter about the tides as you can moor outside, even at low.

Would love to join this trip - but in a baby searider - 4m - may not be able to keep up - and having been off the water for a few years may only be on if weather very kind. Where will people be launching from for this?

I'll be launching at either Warsash or the Camber in Portsmouth depending on weather. You shouldn't have any trouble keeping up!
If it's nasty out we'll run up to the Folly instead so weather shouldn't be a problem unless it's really nasty. There should hopefully be other SR4s there too.

That's my problem too Graeme, I'll be launching from Hmble Point unfortunately, and with minimal Nav technology could do with a couple of peeps to follow across!
Any one else leaving from Hamble?

Assuming the Shakey is back, I should be launching from the Itchen, so will be coming down Southampton Water and passing the hamble if that helps.

That'd be a great help, thanks! Is the lightship quite a distance from Hamble?
I'll drop you a PM nearer the time and see if the RIB'll be fit!
thanks again

Hi
I have absolutely no navigation aids at the moment - and not wanting to rush into anything - no 12v power onboard so wil lhave to go for portable, and not up to speed with what is out there - I do have a portable VHF so can contact people
Am happy to meet and launch anywhere - we are travelling down from the midlands so can launch at Southampton area or Portsmouth - would like a nice easy launch area and easy parking for the trailer with a short distance

The section in the middle with no speed restrictions is about 12 miles or so, so an easy 30 mins at 25 knots. Plus a bit each end to leave Hamble, and then enter Portsmouth Harbour, so might be about 50 mins total. All assuming a nice calm day of course. It took quite a bit longer last December when Nos was with me for the same trip, the wave pattern was too unpredictable, but that was in December! I am hoping for a nicer day than that!
Launching can be a bit of a pain at Warsash depending on tide. It is quite a shallow slip, but should be OK for a 4m boat with more than one person. Easy parking, and free IIRC. Charge to launch though (£5 or so)
Launching at Camber in Portsmouth is on the other hand almost bliss in comparison, very easy. Charges for parking, but it is plentiful, about £8 IIRC, you need coins for the machine. Launching normally free if someone has already launched and left the barrier up.
You could also try launching from Hythe marina at the top of Southampton Water. No idea of costs for this slip.
If it were me, I'd wait to see what the forecast is like. If it's nice and we go to Ventnor, you will need enough fuel for the trip there and back. It is something like 18 miles one way from Portsmouth Harbour, so 36 there and back (unless you decide to go round the island). If you decide to do the same trip from Hamble, it's about 25 miles or so more. So your launching venue might be driven by the amount of fuel you can carry.
If the weather (or just the sea state) is not looking so good, Nos said a trip to Cowes and up to the Folly could be in order. In that case, launching from Hamble or Hythe would probably be best, as you then only have to battle it across the solent, about 6 miles from Hamble to cowes entrances. (about 9 from Portsmouth).
Tell me to shut up if I'm saying stuff either of you already know, and keep asking the questions.

I'll be launching at my usual slip at Haslar the other side of Portsmouth Harbour entrance where the light ship is. Anyone want to join me, it's a £5ver for parking and launch for free.
