SIB Expedition 2003 - Orkney

Update Dates set for 17-24 August 2003. For more details you can skip to Page 14 of this thread!
Also see 'The Great Orkney SIB Expedition 2003'

Right folks, crunch time.

Who is interested in a SIB expedition from John O'Groats to Scapa (Orkney) in August (or thereabouts) 2003? (great potential for a glossy magazine article here).

Brian has been doing some planning with the charts and it seems a feasible proposition given favourable weather. The basic plan would be to meet up around John O'Groats. Do the run over and then stay on the island for at least one night (cheap accommodation available).

So if you are interested can you please:

1. Declare your interest on this thread
2. Email me orkneysib@blackhart.co.uk

We need at least ONE other SIB and a support RIB. More would be great.

Over to you folks..........

Keith (please can someone else turn up this time) Hart

Providing I can get transport up to Scotland, and of course providing I have a boat and engine by then, count me in!

Count me, Jonjo and the boat in as long as the cheap accomodation is not your shed. Narked, you can sign on as third mate if you don't have a motorised lilo by then.

In that case, count me in providing I can make my way up there!

Aye, I've been looking there, but thanks anyway. Currently bidding on a nice one on ebay, approx 12' that'll take a 20hp. With a bit of luck I'll win that auction. Failing that, I'll go back to looking elsewhere.

As for transport, If I am boatless, then I'll go up by train and join David thanks to his kind offer. If I have my boat, I'll try and get someone to take me up by car, as parents will probably be abroad. If I can't get transport for my boat, then I'll join David on his boat and go up by train!

So Keith, I'll be there!

RIBase
Basically I am interested in participating. (Depending of course on lots of things!).
My idea at the moment is to car up to J. O'G. staying locally. My SIB would then sit in Keiths wake, drawn ever onwards by the tempting aroma of bacon sandwiches.
My SIB is only 3.1m with a 6hp Selva so would I be the smallest boat to participate?

Well folks it looks as if we have a convoy!

Mike, nothing fixed but I'm looking at sometime in August.

Just mentioned it to the parents, and they have no objections. So yup, I'll be there, and thanks again to David, as he's sorted out my transport problem.

Can't wait!

Keith,

I'd love to come along.

There are a lot of ifs, though. There's a big family holiday booked in 2003 which I'm going on (no getting out of it as this year has been a family disaster with illness, bereavements and all sorts), and on top of this, work commitments have gone beserk, with time off very difficult.

So, if I can, then I will

Matt - is it the Bombard Tropik?
If so and you need a hand, the seller's 20mins down the road from me. Let me know if you need any local assistance.
Rich.
- and hands off, other bidders! give the guy a break!

It's not looking promising now actually, even though the start price was only 50 quid, the reserve price is something above £250, so even if I win the auction (which is unlikely as it seems someone else has taken an interest in it) I probably won't be able to match the reserve price. Ah well, I'll still see how this goes, failing that, it's back to searching!

Just a passing thought Keith.....If you have not done so already, why do you not have it included in the official BIBOA cruising calendar for 2003. Maybe AW can give you a hand? I know August is a pretty full month already.

Hi Charles

I did think of this but rejected the idea bacause:

1. Last 'cruise' I tried to organise through BIBOA was a dismal failure, no one else but me turned up

2. I am looking at something more informal than an organised 'cruise'. It's more of an 'event'.

3. I'm not sure that I'm going to renew my BIBOA subscription

Thanks for the thought though. Hey, do you have a little SIB?

I had the same response when I organised a BIBOA SIB cruise a couple of years ago. After that I tried to get the club to change its name as it is clearly a RIB club not an Inflatable Boat club -- didn't succeed though . . .

Sad but true........

which is why I voted for Johns name change proposal a couple of years back myself! BIBOA is not a SIB club its a RIB club with a silly name

Only comment I would make is that if you are looking for a RIB or two to go along as safety boats you might publisize that fact in RIBLINES and you might get some support. (that is if you don't get any offers through RIB.NET).

Depending on my Circs next year I might be interested either as a SIB participant or possibly as safety RIB.

Cheers,
Alan
