I'll join you.

Where and when will you be launching? Any plans?

Lunch somewhere on the IoW would be nice but I think the tides are neaps which might be restrictive. I'll check the Almanac when I get home (late) this evening.

Anyone else up for it?

David

Tides look OK for a trip round to Ventnor.

Bruce it'd be good to have you along.

I'd love to go to Ventnor having previously only passed it without stopping and I hear good reports.

The tides for Ventnor are, however: Sat 20 Dec LW 10.24 1.6m HW 17.50 3.1m

With the harbour drying, such a late HW is not ideal and I have today telephoned the harbour office who have confirmed that entry/exit over lunch time is likely to be difficult despite recent dredging operations. They were very helpful but felt that safe entry before 15.00 could not be guaranteed - and with darkness coming at around 16.00, I fear that Ventnor might be for another occasion.

Any other suggestions? So far as launching is concerned, I dry stack at Parkstone Bay in Poole so anywhere in the Western Solent is convenient.....but: have boat; can travel!

If you take it steady it takes 2-3 hours for a full circumnavigation. Perhaps we could do the trip round then head to Cowes or The Folly for lunch.

So rendevous off Calshott at around 10-30?

Round the isand sounds great - never done it in December! We are only expressing long shot interest at the moment but hope to be with you.

Calshot 10:30 - Needles - St Caths - Fort - Cowes (or Ryde) for lunch - sounds good!

Roy, I won't hold BIBOA or Scorpion ownership (aren't they synonymous? ) against you, so that looks like a plan coming together

I'm up for round the island (third time in all and second anti-clockwise for me) subject to weather.

I could meet the group at 11.06 (1/2 hour after LW Portsmouth) at Scratchells Bay (just SE of the Needles) or Alum Bay (just NE) if a SWly blowing. The tide down the West of the island starts to set SE at around 10.00 (being approx Portsmouth HW+5) so should push us round nicely.

With Ryde and the upper part of Wootton Creek only accessible 2-3 hours before Portsmouth HW (HW being 17.21) lunch in Cowes or Yarmouth looks favourite (and gets me as far as possible on the way back to Poole). Could do Folly as a fall back position if weather prohibits round the island.

Anyone else up for it and where and when are others launching?

"Generally dry with occasional bright or sunny spells on Saturday. Breezy at times."

Looking good. Anyone else up for it? The more, the merrier.

Count us in

Hi
Chris and Avocet - have now arranged crew so count us in.
My tide calculations got the same result as you. with the forcast Westerly wind, we have wind and tide running together. (until Bembridge !)

Our plan would be leave Ichen River then breakfast/fuel in Yarmouth
meet sollent group in Harbour or at ageed time/location.

All I would say is it gets dark very early and recovering baot etc will not be easy. We have good daylight early on so may wish to move everything earlier a small tad?.
Cheers
Paul

Paul,

It will be good to actually meet you rather than know you as the mysterious disposer of suspicious ice-cream sandwich boxes in boats!

My teenage crew is going to see Amy Macdonald in Southampton on Friday and will be home late so is unlikely to want an early start on Saturday (let's face it: he doesn't want an early start on any day!). By the time we've got down to the marina, launched and crossed over to the IoW, I can't see being at RV much before 10.30. Do you want to make the RV at Alum Bay for 10.36 and earlier at Yarmouth if I'm running ahead of myself? That puts us half an hour earlier.

I assume that Chris will be launching in Southampton Water somewhere as well, so lunch in Cowes looks good after the circumnavigation.

David

What sort of time do you think you'll be in Cowes?
I may pop out for just a short blast.

Nasher.

Nasher, why not come with us?

On the basis that you can't then assuming RV at 10.28 in Yarmouth, I reckon Cowes about 12.47 (depending on sea state).

Say, in the pub by 1.00 pm.

I'd be good to see you again.
