Neil's Shakespeare seemed to be unshakable. It's quite unnerving having to juggle throttle and steering constantly and watching the guy 25 yards away looking like he's on the only flat water!
( it'd help mine being stuffproof if I hadn't been going too fast in a following sea)

Thanks Matt, she feels quite capable all right.
Not sure my handling skills are up to the boats ability yet though

No wonder we had fun. Average windspeed yesterday afternoon around the Needles was 24 Knots gusting to 30 Knots.

Here,
http://www.weather-file.com/hurst/
This is for Hurst castle. near enough to the Needles to be relevant.
My Co pilot and I were a little taken aback when we returned to Yarmouth after visiting the Needles all full of adrenalin since we had been having a good blast about. Because as we turned South in to Yarmouth we suddenly became aware of the wind blowing up from the South west. It was a bit of a shock. And I guess on the whole way back up the Solent we wouldn't have appreciated what the wind was doing. We noticed it a couple of times when circled whilst waiting for everyone to catch up. It was a lot fiercer wind than was forecast.
Today would have been dodgy.

Was not what I'd call fun (unlike yesterday!)
Went to The Folly for lunch - basically to delay having to cross back to So'ton - wind was horrendous even up there. CG was forecasting F8 "imminently".
Left Cowes at about 2ish - only other RIBS I could see out were ILB's!
Got about a quarter of the way over to Calshot and some of our crew were really not happy, so decided to turn 'round, headed back to Cowes & got the RedJet back. Bit wussy perhaps, but safe day out and happy & comfortable crew are most important things in my books.

I've often wondered if when the wind is like that it might be better to leave Cowes and head due east around Bramble Bank and then go up the Northern Channel so your head on in to the bad stuff rather than take it side on where its at its most strongest in the Central Solent.
Never tried it because I always take the most direct route and only really think about it once I'm in the rough stuff. I tend just to plow on then.

No worries! I was having a particularly bad hair day thanks to that wind, so you could've been forgiven for mistaking me for a bloke!

I tried this last Mon morning - worked quite well. Chose it as there were two container ships manoeuvering about in the Thorne Channel and two Red Funnels close by also. My only concern was that it takes that bit longer, so if conditions are nasty up there you've got to endure them for longer.

Well, testament to the wind conditions yesterday...
Mid morning, I'd say about 11:30am a yacht motored into Haslar with the top 6' of its jib sail torn to shreads... It was blowing so hard across the marina that at one point we were having trouble standing on the pontoon - a good day for doing PB1
As for Sunday, well I think I'm in love with the SR5.4! Granted I can barely walk still but what a difference over the SR4! Even in spite of my other half's best attempts at sinking it, it felt completely at home and planted the whole day...granted I wasn't at the helm...
Thanks to the other two boats for being there when we stuffed though, I think I might have gone into full on panic mode otherwise...
Biggles - love the new signature!
