Summer Getaways 2008 - tba
I hope this isn't too early of me, but with the threat of Winter arriving very soon, my thoughts are turning of the Summer already.
I thought I would create this thread so that RIBnet members could bounce Idea's off each other in an attempt to create one or two decent cruises during the Spring/Summer/Autumn. Be it long weekends or something larger.
Some people have difficulty in getting time off work and need to plan this early in the year for their leave.
So I invite your suggestions in the hope we can get it on!
My thoughts are with the Channel Islands and Western parts of Brittany.

Andy,
I'm with you. Did Alderney last year and really enjoyed it plus the Channel islands seem to have lots to offer (Good weather, several islands close together, its sort of British and it was cheap) also the paperwork involved is not too horrendous.
I would also like to do France but need to get an ICC before then.
Nick.

Scilly Isles
I was thinking of trailering the RIB to launch at Rock in Cornwall as I know somewhere where trailers could be stored. Then its about 3-4 hours to the Scilly Isles.
Camping at St Martins for a few days and spend some time checking out all the various Islands.
I have an excellent article on the Scillies if anyone is interested PM me.
Chris

That might work as part of a main holiday for me and the Family. Could pitch the Tent and leave the family to fend for themselves for a day or two

What do you need for an ICC? I thought a PBII would be sufficient to apply to the RYA for one?

One trip I want to do is along the coast to Dartmouth, sling a canvas over the boat to camp under overnight, then back the next day.
Great way to burn a large hole in the petrol budget
Nasher.

Petrol Budget?.....You got one of them?
I just pay as you go, just throw the receipts away or burn them and then you won't shock yourself or get divorce papers though the door

That would be ideal Andy as the place where I would suggest trailer storage would be the campsite where I would be also staying. A freind of mine has a static caravan on the site but you can also pitch a tent.
Its a lovely place, Rock and if your into your grub then you've got Padstow just over the estuary with Fish and Chips a la Rick Stein and loads of other nice places to eat.

Scilly Isles
As an idea of timings I would suggest we consider May as this year it was one of the best weather months we had! I spoke to St Martins campsite and they are already booked up from Mid July till end of August so its either May June or September !
How about 9th,10th 11th & 12th
and as a reserve 16th 17th 18th & 19th
I have avoided the May spring bank holiday although that could be another possible?

I think basing anything on when the weather was good last year is probably a bit floored... but then I am biased as I'd love to do this trip but could not do anything until mid-june!

I know what you are saying Neil but I am reliably informed by the Rock guru Paul Hancock who is the beachmaster at Rock that May is historically a good month down there. Clearly no guarantees.
However I have no problems with June if that is what everyone would prefer??

How about more than one trip !
May would be a good time to start with further trips during July and September.
Then we could have cruises to all the places we want to go to.
Channel islands/France.
Scillies
Dartmouth/West country.
All the above are in no particular order.

That's great Peter, I hoped this thread would get the collective, creative grey matter of RIBnet flowing. I for one hope to make at least two major voyages this year.
FYI: I am also planning to organise a flare demo with the RNLI or local authorised agency when the weather warms up. There are plenty of people that haven't handled flares before (me included) and there seems to be a specific technique for setting some types of flares off that experience can only teach.
There was certainly a lot of intrest in a previous thread I started and I have the nessesary contacts in place to get one organised quickly. Hopefully could schedule the demo over a cruise weekend with BBQ on beach or something.
PS: Thanks for making this thread a sticky John.

sounds like a good long trip Rock to Scilly .
I have always had the best luck with weather late May or early June .
You would find Bryher a better bet for anchorage and the campsite is a very short walk .

Yep, that's correct. Form is available here for an ICC - http://www.rya.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/C.../0/ICCForm.pdf
The ICC is free to RYA members, or costs £39 if not a member. However, it is cheaper to become an RYA member, especially if you pay by direct debit and or have a £5 off voucher (which you get with most certificates), so your best bet is to enclose a membership application and then cancel after one year, if you are not already a member.
If you don't have a Powerboat Level 2, and don't wish to get one, most schools will do an ICC test for you, often aboard your own boat, which lasts a few hours.
