The BIBOA South-West Cruise May 24/25th 2003

The BIBOA South West Cruise is planned this year for the weekend of 24th and 25th May, i.e. 2 weekends after the RIBNET inaugural meeting.

It will also be based at Mayflower Marina, Plymouth and, shock, horror, use the same Hotel, The Invicta, near The Hoe, as our land base.

I would welcome expressions of interest from fellow members.

I will arrange Berthing and trailer parking, at favourable rates at the Marina, and if you give me 24 hours, I will try and get us rates at The Invicta as well.

For those who have not been on this cruise before, let me run over some of the salient points.
Skippers must be BIBOA members and have up-to-date 3rd party insurance.
The Cruise is especially focused on those relatively new to ribbing/those with families and those who would appreciate “easy” offshore cruising.
On each of the two days we will leave Plymouth and go either East or West, staying close to the coast and passing all the places of interest that I can conceivably think of along the way.
Each day we will cover about 70-80nmiles.

If you are interested I have a write-up (uses MS Word) and another document (in MS Excel format) with details of all waypoints, bearings etc. which I would be happy to e-mail you.

Alternatively call me on 01803 559800 or e-mail me with as much of the following info as possible
You and crews names
Boat name, make, length, petrol or diesel
Engine size and rough cruising range
Does your VHF support Dual Watch?
Your mobile phone number.
Any other factor or information you think I would like to know

Using some of this info. Iwill then circulate a list of “runners and riders”.

This will be the fourth year this cruise has been held, and weather apart (!), most participants seem to have had an enjoyable time, this apparantly despite my Capn. Bligh like insistance that skippers "Stop fannying about" and get on with it.

It's in the diary, Brian. Add 2 Garsides and Mag A to the list.
Cheers...

I have arranged for all BIBOA memebers to get a 5% discount off the rates for the Invicta for this cruise.

I have made my booking already and have (in the space of less than 24 hours!) received notification from 10 people that they are likely to attend.

Not bad, huh?

Did I mention Charlestown?
Ah well, any excuse to bring this thread back up to the top again.
Charlestown is a privately owned little harbour that houses a number of "Old" sailing ships. These are used by film and TV companies and re-rigged/painted/named for each program or film.
We won't be able to actually enter the harbour, so I thought you would like to see what you would be missing if you don't attend The S/W Cruise.......oh, there I go again!

Almost unbelievably, and despite my trying to put everyone off with threats of bad weather, some 14 boats have now signed up for this cruise.
Those of you at Plymouth this last weekend have had a small taste of "the best cruising area in the south of England" so how about some of you signing up for some more?

Brian, it's still 9 days away and, at this stage, this is something of a long shot, but it looks to me as if a big blob of high pressure is building in the East Altantic and heading towards Plymouth. Incredibly, this year the weather might just be nice.

Mike I do hope this is not one of your legendary "Azores High" which no-one has ever seen

In the past you have claimed that either: "it isn't moving from the Azores" or "it seems to have dissapated"

I simply tell everyone the weather will be crap, and if it's any better than that, well "what a bonus-see what happens when you come ribbing with me".

I personally think the Azores move! There always seems to be a high over the islands but it always go north or only make it to the Bay of Biscay!

Brian

Unfortunately I will no longer be able to make this weekend.

A real pity, as this was the main cruise I was looking forward to.

Still hoping to make the Scillies trip though - but wont be able to confirm for a week or so

Graeme

Brian, at the risk of being a clever-dick, I'll continue to stick my neck out for the time being.

It's gonna be windy from the West and South West through to next Thursday. That's cos there's a low which is forecasted to remain pretty much stationery over the north of UK and a high creeping up over France. The air squeezed bewteen the two is going quite fast.

If that low dissipates or moves off to the East and the high over France walks north over Charles it could reach Plym by Friday. We'll see.....

I will be down and staying at the Invicta Friday and Saturday so if anybody else is about Friday would be good to meet up for a beer.
