Maybe a tad inside , down to about 70-100 m . All taken with the trustiny olympus refed to in another thread - the police were siting at about 150m ish, off either side , stern looked 'busy' so crept in toward the bow . - but the police were to worried about 10 jetski screaming around the place . I waved at both launches nicely & did a complete circuit at 2 knts.

As you say a massive boat ! The thing that got me was seeing a RIB tucked into one of the sides - RIB must be about 8m - but looked tiny ! Just see it in this pic

Pete

Sorry we missed you until the end, trouble at home and on the roads resulted in a very late launch. However, a great day on the water and very surreal to see it so far in the distance, as you rounded the Island at Cowes.
We could not call, as when we passed Cowes and I thought the radio had gone a little quiet, I looked round to find the whole of the aeriel had sheared from the A frame!! Some crab must be buzzing around the sea bed like a little remote contolled car .....

Some pics we caught:-

Pic2 is one of the 3 large lifts used to get aircraft from the deck to the hanger below
Pic5 is one of the Ribs stored on the ship

No probs - glad you had a good day - had exactly the same thing myself a few weeks ago with the aerial ! For me a quick & easy & cheap (ish - £30ish ) fix !

I liked the fact you could see through the stern lift completely!

the whiskers, at a guess are to indicate the widest point of the ship (around midships) at the bow for navigating narrow canals or something. That is a guess though...

According to a rapid Google search - 3,000,000 USG. And potentially not just for aircraft and vehicles

"There are four emergency diesels of 10,720hp (8MW)."

Good sturdy inboards

Surely if its thats tight you wouldnt risk it ? -its not like you can just stop and turn it round if its too narrow ? I'm thinking some fancy ASW detection or something ? Mounted as far out as possible ?
