AIS Data

So I have an account on Marine Traffic, and also have my RIB 'Beretta' set-up under my ships - as I sometimes use the AIS iPhone app as I dont have any AIS kit on board.

I got a mail this morning to say that Beretta was in range - Strange I thought, but then I thought maybe I turned on the iPhone app by mistake, so when I got into work I thought I would have a look at the location...

So while I am at work, Beretta seems to have gone for a trip in the Solent without me!

Thats the trouble with a system that has no authentication in it. I could buy an AIS and enter your MMSI into it today and make it appear you were in the solent...

Now I don't know why I'd want to do that but its easy to mistype the number... ...if you were a nuclear sub I know why some would want to impersonate it!

Your MMSI matches whats in the ITU database so its not your error...

However it looks like it was only a single piece of data - there isn't much in the way of check data in the transmission. So I suspect a single digit was received wrongly by the receiving station...

Yeah, just seen once and nothing more in the track, and I have checked the tracker and this still shows all is safe and well in storage.
