Another powerboat tragedy

The powerboat championships in Essex have had a boat turn over and a crew member died. Am I right that another loss occurred at this event last year?

Sadly it was Ian Stirling a good friend of mine who lost his life yesterday - one of the really good guys and he will be missed greatly be everyone who knew him.

He was part of the "Birmingham Navy" but actually lived in Cornwall

That was in Dover, but the BOAT was called Harwich 2011.

Thoughts go out to family & friends, always sad to hear of a loss like this..

Thank you very much - if you want to know how much he meant to pretty much everyone in British and World power-boating have a look on Boatmad.

Very sorry to hear this, but after seeing the boats, I cant really say im suprised!

Doing 35 knots is fast enough, let alone 100+ or whatever these things do!

I really wanted a go in one of them!! Perhaps not anymore...

Just to get this straight they don't do 100 knots or even MPH, their speed is in the eighties (MPH not Knots), and although their speed has increased since the XS200's have been upgraded this year they are generally very safe boats - I have raced against the Mannerfelt Batboats many times and whilst I believe our boat was quicker in the rough it doesn't make it safer. I will not try to assume what happened here, but what I can tell you is that Ian was not only one of the nicest guys I have ever met, he was also a bloody good driver but accidents happen.

After Kevin (Kitten) had a chat with Ian's Partner we have agreed to call the new boat the Stirling 34' - Ian had a fantastic reputation for going well in rough conditions and I am sure the new boat will do the same in his honour.

Cracking idea.

We provided the safety cover for this event and after seeing peoples reactions to Ian's death I know it will be well received.
