Interesting plane the Cirrus - it has a safety parachute which can be deployed when the aircraft gets into trouble.

253 miles from land? I think thats what the article says.
thats quite some miscalculation by the pilot !

Holy crap that is a long flight over water for a small plane. He was flying from California to Maui. He had enough fuel onboard, but couldn't get the auxiliary tanks to provide the fuel properly. Text book ditch though
