No. Should I be?

Actually I have yet to be particuarly excited by anything that Apple have made. I don't even want an iPod!

Not yet, but if the rumour mills are correct it may be announced today.

Me neither, I'm tone deaf. All songs sound the same to me, so why I'd want to carry 4 trillion of em around with me.

Looks like it will probably be a decent smartphone/pda thing.

Is it fundamentally any more than a better version of something like the XDA which has been around for years though? A better implementation almost certainly, but hardly a new idea.

the success of the ipod was because it was ultra-simple to use and was very logical to operate. If the iphone uses the same thinking behind its operation then they will no doubt be on to a winner. (looking at the apple demonstrations of its operation on the site, like the ipod it does look pretty slick to operate) - but the ipod does have the central click wheel which I don't think this has.

It's a phone. Does it cost less than £50? If the answer is no, then the answer is no.

My Nokia for £30 works perfectly as a phone and if I want to listen to music on the move I'll turn up the radio in the Discovery

I guess I'm not the target market

I bought my first Apple computer more than 10 years ago, it's still working fine. In the mean time I added a titanium Powerbook and an iPod and upgraded the old computer. They all work together and I never had a crash.
So I had a good look at the iPhone, demonstrated on the website, and I love it.
It's an iPod with music and video. A telephone with voicemail, conference, sms and photos. A camera, calculator, etc. An internet device with a Safari browser, mail, maps and widgets with live weather reports, etc.
So when you say it's just another telephone, you don't know what you're talking about.
And it has NO buttons not ONE!

Jeremy Clarkson summed it up best a couple of years ago when he said something like "I want a telephone to make telephone calls. I don't need it to be able to video my genitals and post it on the internet."

I can see the appeal and 'tis certainly neat and nicely designed, but personally the thought of having a large part of my life stored in a little box which can either be stomped on or is highly likely to be nicked by somebody the moment I take my eyes off it is a bit scary.

Bet they sell millions of them at Christmas time though...

I love things like this and think it's a great idea and looks fantastic - but I wouldn't pay £300 for the sake of having them combined, Id still rather have them separate as I normally destroy one phone a year and to loose 2 items (ipod+phone) in one go sounds a bit expensive and time consuming to restore. Last year I dropped one of my phones into a pint of beer (it died a happy death) while the replacement got drowned when I jumped out of my rib on the slipway into 3ft of water.

Although I assume when the service providers get hold of these you will be able to get them insured, and assuming you are using it to it's full potential as a phone and ipod you stand a chance of loosing a lot of data in one go. still, I suppose it's all backed up on your computer though.

I too have destroyed a phone similarly... ...I am amazed noone makes a genuinely water proof one - there are a few which are "splash proof" but nothing you would take for a swim and expect to still work... ...surely there are enough idiots like me who could justify one.
