I haven't used the Remote Disk software (as Apple call it) yet.
I did use Handbrake to rip one of my own DVDs the other day so I could watch it in bed. The rip took a few hours using an Intel iMac. I wifi'ed the rip to the Air once it had finished. It looked beautiful on the Air's screen but it did stutter on a couple of occasions.
So, in short, I haven't really missed the optical drive so far. I imagine our reliance on drives, CDs etc will now rapidly diminish. I think downloading movies is just over the horizon for all of us too.
As Steve Jobs said, if you really need an optical drive, ethernet, firewire, then perhaps a MacBook Pro would be more appropriate for you.
If you want an ultra-portable second machine, then the MacBook Air is a great choice.
