AT LAST, 18 years wait

As from midnight tonight (01.00 UK time) we are officially started whale hunting again after 18 years of stupid ban. Hvalur 9 (Whale 9) has already left the harbour and will hopefully bring the first legaly caught whale to shore tomorrow

And why exactly is it a stupid ban? Probably just as justified to hunt Vikings!!!

And before anyone starts I hate Greenpeace with a passion - wouldn't mind if they stuck to protecting Whales though!!!

The ONLY reason Iceland wants to start killing Whales again is for profit by selling the stuff to the japs!!!

It's a barbaric, inhumane industry, just like our seal hunt. The justification is entirely economic. Be prepared to be scorned by the rest of the world...

And yes, the seal hunt makes me ashamed to be a Canadian.

mmm I wonder

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6059564.stm

"Iceland recently announced plans to export meat from its scientific whaling programme to the Faroe Islands, whose government maintains it is exempt from Cites regulations.
Icelandic and Norwegian whalers would like in the long run to export to Japan, the world's biggest market for whale meat."

Re: whale hunting

Just remember, the whale you hunt may be your wife... No Wait! that's just in the U.S. where obesity is rampant! O.K. seriously now... I am not for nor against whale hunting, I don't see what need there is to hunt them but our culture here in Ohio in the U.S.A is very different than that of Iceland. A Whale is no different than a cow, pig, dog, cat, elephant or any other mammal excepting the fact that it lives in the water and is very large. Man have been killing and hunting all kinds of animals (including other men) for eons and will continue to do so for the forseeable future, that is what we are, top of the food chain like it or not...

Cut the fellow some slack... I mean we are talking about a chap who was sensible enough to think that he could safely cross the North Atlantic in a ski boat that had a freeboard of zilch to start with, after sticking a 275 Verado, 600 litres of fuel and three fat Icelanders in it....
...It’s those dark nights, you know? I think they must affect one’s thought processes…

Knowing how much time you have spent in the UK, and other parts of the world I was surprised when you posted this thread, as it was bound to provoke some very strong reactions.
It was never even going to be a debate because I couldn’t see anyone agreeing with you.

All

There are some very strong cultural differences between Iceland and for example the UK, brought about by the environments we have developed in, and the history of our peoples.
In the past activities such as hunting wild animals were an essential part of staying alive, but these days have become cultural differences with regard to what animals, or even people, each culture sees as acceptable to kill for whatever reason.

My personal opinion is very confused on the matter. And is wide open to be torn apart by those with a more definite view.
I cannot justify the killing of any wild animal unless it is under extreme circumstances, I would need the comfort to decide in each case. For the record I don’t agree that it is justified in this case.

On the other hand, looking at the bigger picture, I believe diversity of cultures should be maintained, and get angry when one culture decides another culture is wrong, and tries to impose their view on the other. This argument can’t stand up very well however when one cultures actions have an effect on another culture or the world as a whole.
The grey area in this specific case is the scarcity of the Whale and the impact that hunting has on the world population. How about the US’s reluctance to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions?

As I’ve said its my opinion, and wide open to be torn apart.

I am however grown up enough to accept that Bogi and I have cultural differences that mean we don’t agree on some emotive issues, but I will still look forward reading his posts and welcoming him on the occasions we get the chance to have a chat at the Solent gathering.
