Basking sharks Cornwall
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8090784.stm
Some incredible footage shot off Cornwall last week. What magnificent creatures!!!
We get quite a few around the Gower coast as well - along with Sunfish and turtles - suppose the West coast has it's advantages when it's not raining.

Magnificent indeed, majestic beasts who harm no-one [unless you're plankton!..one or two on here might not be safe thinking about it!]Twice the weight of an elephant!I've Seen plenty over the years, and Sunfish,as big as dustbins, and a huge 'Leather back'..about 7' long! off the Lizard once! This truly is a 'Sceptered Isle',and we have loads to see, just hope we get some decent weather soon!!
'Sticky' has some great shots of Baskers, taken around the Scillies, I'll ask him to post em.Looking forward to seeing some more down there myself, soon!!!

They are coming up through the North Cornwall/Devon coast, spotted at Lundy last week.
Had the good fortune to get very close to them in the past, yes indeed Maximus, truly magnificent creatures.

There has been the odd dolphin about, but I've not seen one myself.
I have however seen seals in Langstone harbour.
Nasher.

It actually didn't leak-the damp patch was from sitting in Neil's inflatable just beforehand.
Sussed me on the rubber though..

Here are a couple off Peel, IOM.
There are loads of them about. Feed off plankton and jellyfish. Come up the west coast every summer between June and September.
You have to be v. carefull not to run them over whenever you go out.

That's fantastic!
I would be mildly/wildly anxious - I know they're harmless, but they're big old buggers!

Wow what a shot!!!
Nice clear water as well - a rarity in the Britsol Channel but gets better the further West you go.

Brilliant pics!
A good many years ago there was a report of a fishing boat that sunk off of Bembridge I think. The Basking Shark belly flopping across the boat causing a capsize.
If I remember rightly the experts said it was feeding by rounding up a shoal of fish or whatever and corkscrewing in an upward manner to catch them. This resulted in the shark coming out the Sea and landing on said boat.

No Basking Sharks today, but just as we were approaching Lundy we were surrounded by common dolphins. Slowed down of course and then had a few riding the bow wave.
First time for this with the RIB.
No photographs as by the time cameras were out they had moved on. Got an SLR, which is great but a bit cumbersome on the boat, so a small digital camera that will fit in my pocket is on the shopping list.
