Yeh i had a binliner 652 and it was clear it was never designed for the British waters, American lakes no problem..

So they couldn't handle a bit of Solent chop, but they are fine on 300 mile long Lake Michagan ?

I have done some serious passages in 'Lake boats' . No they are not as good as a well set up rib in rough water, but wifey really hates trying to sunbathe while balancing on a jockey seat

Thanks for all the advice, still looking at it. I was hoping it would fit into my garage but that won't be possible so I'd have to pay for local storage.
If I did go for one it would make sense to buy second hand, like the one offered earlier in this thread.
The thing is, you hire a boat like this in a lovely sunny Greek island and think "this is great" razzing around on perfectly calm seas in 38 degrees heat, exploring deserted beaches and watching turtles.
But not so good for my boating activities here in the UK thinking about it, where we spend much time on the canal, on the Broads, and Lake Windermere etc where you can only do walking speed and my SIB performs fine there, plus it fits into the back of my van.
Only thing is if it rains we get wet....like it did last time we were on the Broads, set off in sunshine and clear skies, clouded over and sudden rainstorm. Was actually quite amusing, rain and then hail, so heavy could hardly see where we were going. Gave all the people in cruisers a bit of a laugh anyway.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the mass produced Yank sports boats are much of a muchness. Binliners being at the lower end and Four Winns towards the top, but not miles apart. The Scandi built boats are tops.
We had a Rinker 206 Captiva Sports Cuddy for 9yrs when the kids were small, it was perfect for our needs at the time. 5.7ltr V8, lots of protection and comfort. I'd go anywhere in the Rinker that I'd go in the rib.

Too many times I've seen little bayliner-esque boats, shallow-V wakeboarding boats, having a horrific time bobbing in medium chop in the Solent as we fly past at 40 knots...

For sunlounging have a cushion made to measure for the bow between the tubes and the console - fits two (very thin) people...

On the subject of canopies and covers a few manufacturers do have optional extra canopies either self supported from the console or from the console to the A-frame (e.g. Redbay), so rain is not a must...

In truth however Mustos and ski-goggles are more fun...

Coz, experience free 2nd hand car dealers drive 'em. little to do with the boats. If you can drive a boat, a length for length sports boat will keep up with a rib in all but the most severe conditions. Also, some ribs are better suited to the rough stuff than others.

That is my point, the shallow-v hulls bob in and out of waves whereas deeper-v hulls cut through the waves.

Like for like in length does not mean like for like in weight, a wake-boarding boat is leaning towards a sort of displacement hull, it sits lower (no tubes) and takes more power to plane.

Hardboats need a lot more power than ribs like for like to achieve the same speeds.

Just saying RIBs are the bomb.

Very shallow draft... and you're going to feel the chop when the wind blows. How about something like this. Mac600 Sports Boat built in 2005 by Marine Revolution £12,950

Granted it has an outboard, but it still has a sports boat look about, but with a forward berth, decent freeboard depth, sun canopy, plenty seating, and isn't as extreme as full blown Raider or Quicksilver pilot-house boat. Anyone here been on one?

Think over the past 8 years or so in the North east there's been 2 bin liner founderings resulting in 5 deaths , granted the Last Call was out in bad conditions at Whitby and the other further up the coast had its transom altered and played about with .

For what it is worth, I had a ski boat before my rib. Fast yes, lots of cup holders yes, but not a patch on a rib. As far as I am concerned a rib is the 4x4 of the sea. The family feels so much safer in the rib, than the ski boat in any sort of sea, and whilst we had a bimini, we used it once in two years, as the sun never shines enough.

I'd not have another ski boat in a hurry.

I've decided to stick with my Zodiac SIB for now

After all I just bought a new engine for it and have still not had a chance to try it out properly
