Best things are free?

Well they are in my case. I was GIVEN just before Christmas a 42" Samsung plasma tv. It was a greatful customer who had just bought a 42" LCD as his speakers were crackling on the plasma set. I have a surround sound system so wasn't going to use the speakers anyway!!! The bloke says the plasma picture is better than the new LCD he's replaced it with.

just installed the tv today and it's awesome. Having said that my Sony 32" CRT still has a much better picture but now it looks small..........

If your Sony telly has a better picture than the plama one then it's not awesome. It depends on your standards I suppose. The good becomes the bad when faced with the better.

We currently do a lot of work for a company that mods/refurbs/designs all sorts of electronic products - in particular Plasma and LCD tvs. I guarantee that none of them can give as good results as a 32" Sony 100hz CRT. The blacks just aren't black enough.

Obviously if you are using a TRUE HD output it's different because the Sony won't display it but using a normal source like a normal DVD player the CRT is better. You need to put them literally next to each other to see the difference. Many people are won over by the sheer size of the display and the fact they sit further back. For example if you go up close to a cinema screen they are crap.

As to my standards I would say they are pretty high if I think Plasma and LCDs aren't that good. And how many people pause a DVD when there is a round object on the screen to make sure the aspect ratio is spot on??? Hoping to see an OLED soon - should be a lot better.

Fek Codders, in your first post you said the plasma tv you were given is awesome. Perhaps I have a misunderstanding of the word awesome.

It is awesome due to the fact the picture is very good - not excellent like the sony CRT but the screen is so much bigger you can sit further away.

What I can't understand is why people would buy a 32" LCD/Plasma when a CRT is better. Also people call them "flat screen" when my CRT also has a flat screen.

Of course if you need to hang it on a wall it's a different story - the Sony 32" must weign about 12 stone!!!

I think it is the juxtaposition of such contradictions that JW is arguing about!

I think you have answered your own question - any whether it is on the wall or not a 32" flat panel is a lot smaller in floor space than a 32" CRT - but probably more importantly is aesthetically a lot better. I don't know about you but usually the picture quality on my tv has more to do with the quality of the incoming signal (digibox, vcr!, dvd & leads, analogue signal) than the display itself.

Ah, I've got it now! It's your understanding of awesome that's err... unusual. My thesaurus says; wondrous, amazing, astonishing, inspiring and majestic.

I've still got a Sony tv too and I agree with you that the black level is superior to a LCD tv but black level isn't the whole story about picture quality and in comparison to my main LCD tv the Sony is old tech. If fact, judging by the thesaurus, I'd say the LCD picture quality is awesome.

I have a Sony 32" 100hz CRT and Sony 46" LCD. The LCD is much better, IMHO, but it does get a high def signal which the CRT can't use.

By the way anyone want a Sony Wega cheap ?
