Of course they don't want anyone getting hurt!!!
Anyone heard of the film "Whiskey Galore"???

I am sure they ask you to keep clear!!!! what is the Beach Combers salvage percentage??
It would be interesting to just se what the rules here are.
Can one claim a container on the beach????
They are safer here than half submerged on the shipping lane.
But what if there are some really iffy substancs on it.
Can one track the manifest on the Web.
Codders, you are the COmputer person, can we get a look at the manifest???
SOmeone in the Emergency services should be able to know what they are dealing with. I wouldwish to know if I lived there including the amount of Bunker oil on board?????
Lyme bay could end up being "Grime Bay" Just stirring it up!!!!
Its one of the things I do really well.

Just remember what is classed as a dangerous cargo these days would have been laughed at a few years ago. Even hair dye and household paint is considered to be like nuke waste these days!!!

Just seen that she ran aground in 2001 at high speed and had to have major repairs carried out in Vietnam - looks like that could well have had something to do with it!!!
http://www.dolphin-maritime.com/casualty89.html
I still wonder about the environmental aspect of this -
"Department of Transport salvage chief Robin Middleton said he had decided the ship should be towed in and beached in Lyme Bay to reduce environmental damage."
I am sure 3,500 tons of fuel oil would be better off in the open sea than in Lyme bay!!!

We saw a container a few years back floating off arran, they float just under the surface (or this one was), hitting it with a rib,the least you would do is lose your gearcase and put everyone in the water.
The thought of this happening at night or dusk in a large cruiser....it would take the bottom out the boat, dosen't bear thinking about, keeping a look out is all you can do,but after seeing one for real (and by chance) you would be lucky to avoid it.
It influences how I use my boat.

Your taking the wrong angle on this, what a superb opportunity for the local community. Think of all those B&Bs that would normally be closed at this time of year, now full of press hacks, coast guard, salvage crews, environmental agency, DOT, MAIB, MCA etc. They all need fish suppers etc.
Hopefully a few more containers will disappear beneath the waves, because in the spring the diving crowds will then decend on the area. Now were are my diving cylinders

As you say many businesses in the area must be glad of the extra trade, but at the same time they should be worried about the impact of a big spill on their summer trade.
You don't have a powerful lantern ideal for standing on the shore swinging from side to side do you?
Think I'll start making up some lifting bags and re-propping Nashers Revenge so its geared towards towing large heavy underwater objects closer to shore.
Nasher.

Beachcombers are out in force - all the Police can do is hand out forms - looks like as long as you declare what you find you can claim salvage!!! Considering the amount of red tape etc etc I suspect many people will make a killing.

Those timber planks lost a couple of weeks ago are now washing up on the beach at Lee on Solent, anyone need a new substantial fence, Matt perhaps ?

Realistically what's the likelyhood of being able to tow a container to shore with a RIB?
If anyone's up for trying it I'll crew. There's a lot of money floating around there.

In these situations what happens to the ships crew?
Are they now out of work and looking for a new job or will they just get a transfer to another ship ?

[QUOTE=IBWET;183143] We saw a container a few years back floating off arran, they float just under the surface (or this one was), hitting it with a rib,the least you would do is lose your gearcase and put everyone in the water.
This happens very often in Bay of Biscay I am told.
I have read in our paper that the police are clearing away people from the area.
What is the legal difference between loitering and beach combing.
If I lived in or off Lyme Bay, I would be appaled at what has happened. I would be gunning for the clown who diverted this disaster onto my patch.
I would also be gunning for the clown who left it go to sea let alone with with impending storms, I would be gunning for the people who are supposed to have fixed it in Koria or where ever.
Can anyone please tell me when a Politician or Gov agent will take responsibilty for their actions.
At least it is British reg, isnt it, surely there will be Justice right? I mean does anyone live in Lyme Bay, what has Greenpeace have to say about it?
Am I missing a part of this Jig saw or is it all for the birds (Please forgive that black pun)

Those bikes won't be worth using for anything but parts after a dunking. BMW bike finish quality has gone down the toilet since about 1990 and they'll corrode like buggery-IF the ECU's have survived.

Virtually nothing in the automotive world is worth having after a prolonged dunking in salt water. Nor is anything else if it had electricity connected at the time and left connected for any length of time afterwards.

Won't stop people flogging them on though to unsuspecting buyers.
Just watch E Bay go crazy now.

The only way they'll be able to sell them is in bits. There's no way they'll be able to register them as the VIN numbers will be traced and they'll get knacked for non declaration of wreck. BMW know exactly what's in those containers down to the key numbers.
