Bit different.
Quite a bit of work - respect for that.
But, a bit sad.

I'm not sure it's any sadder than grown men sitting talking on the Internet about blow up boats, or someone obsessively restoring an RNLI or exMOD rib to service condition for thier personal use...

No sadder than any hobby, including ribbing, and most defo being member of a forum.

Being arrogant for a bit(Nothing unusual I hear some cry) I think I've got more right than most to decide what's sad with respect to stuff like that, and I do count MYSELF amongst the sad ones having owned the boat below for over 30yrs.

Old aluminum kayak? Never seen that before.
As to the model sea warfare, some of those guys take their hobby pretty seriously. Used to be battles on a lake in SF; don't know if they still do that. The boat in the OP looks like it has Maine registration numbers. Wonder what it's powered by?

Mk9 Canoe, motorised.
You are perfectly correct that the Cockleshell Canoes were the Mk1.
Fully kitted out looked like below.
