I don't believe that, unless your bolthole happens to be the local exchange!
I've never heard of anyone anywhere who ever got full speed out a modem!
(which brings us nicely back round to Pol's comment about "max"..... )

It's very Irish, but not photoshopped.
I have a local relay antenna for donegaldan's wireless ISP on me roof and I'm getting whatever bandwidth that unit gets (unrestricted) - that result is fairly average.
And every year he sends me a nice wee cheque for the lekkie bill

well I have to go outside with a bucket and get the 512K bring it inside beside the fire to dry it out, post my messages and take it back out to the end of the road and wait for the postie to collect it .. he takes it to the locat post/provisions shop, who puts it in a van and takes it to a waiting train .. which has a man that tips it all back into the internet, back at a big station .. see ? were up to speed alright

reason for post was that it reminded me of a story about some signals guys that couldnt understand why their tea never went cold when setting down on a box that housed some of their radio equipment .. the reason ofcourse was that the box was emitting microwaves which they didnt know
Another of only a few years ago about someone who went to empty his welly whilst holding on to a white pole .. which burnt his hand in a weird way (on a RNAD base)
Moral of story is dont use blutooth or mobile phones or live under pylons or hold on to white masts
well thats me fecked then

Sorry Biggers - I got the reference. I seem to remember stories of chocolate bars melting in front of Radar installations.
No, I just told me crew that I had installed aircon for their comfort and convenience

Dunno! But he WAS able to make two dinners disappear when I wasn't paying attention.
I'll try him on something easy like turning water into wine and if that goes OK, I'll start him on the whisky...

I work for a well known telecom provider, the answer is as follows, all telecoms providers deliberately advertise the speed as being "up to" as there is a number of factors which relate to speed, the most prevalent being the infrastructure, how far away you are from the exchange and what your wires are like from the exchange, I'm never going to get 8mb until a lot of wires etc are upgraded, I did recently get an increase from half a Meg to 2mb due to some upgrades at the exchange.
The other factor is the broadband router, if your like me and don't like devices permanently switched on then you won't get the max speed you could get, the stuff in the exchanges like the router to be switched on permanently, if it's not always on the line speed at the exchange will automatically switch to a lower speed as it thinks the connection has failed at some point and hence starts checking the connection.
So short of it, to get max advertised speed, move house to be next to an exchange and leave your router on 24x7 ...
