From all of the information I've seen, heard & read, the spitfires were supposed to have been buried in crates extremely close to, if not under the current airport runway.
These are very large wooden crates which were not designed to have been buried for so long and as a result would not have been weather proofed.
The estimate of spending only £1,000,000 to achieve air worthy status is extremely unlikely

Depends if they we're packed as spares or not
