Hi If your new to it i would suggest a fixed spool reel as to avoid those bird nests (tangles when letting line out)and boat rod.Your local dealer will advse you on what fih you will catch. You will also need a landing net to keep fish when caught under control and not flapping around your feet also its safer than a gaff (large hook like Captain hooks right hand). You can spend 50 or 150 quid Hope that helps

Although somewhere like argos has cheap fishing gear you will find your local tackle shop has invaluable advice. You could perhaps use them as price comparison or simply to look at pictures to familerise yourself with different types of gear

Now - im not a fisherman at all - but.
If all you want to catch is a few mackrel for the odd beach BBQ - this is what works for me.
A handline with a nice heavy 10 or 12 oz trolling weight then 10m of line with a swivel to a spoon spinner.
Chuck it in and tow it along at about 3 to 5 knotts (tickover on most outboards)
Not very professional looking but mackrel just jump on it - you can pretty much throw it in and pull it straight out with a mackrel on the end everytime (man them fish are dumb).
Other advantages are it cost less than £10, very small (ie stash it under the seat so its always there), Doesnt need any bait.
Disadvantage - doesnt look very cool like real fishing gear would, cant catch anything other than mackrel (well i havnt anyway).
If what you meant by "sea fishing" was a bit more serious than this - please disregard this post and wait for a proper fishing enthusiast to answer you.
What ever you do have fun

You can get some great travel rods that fold up really small that you can keep them on your RIB all the time. Shimano do one that is a 15/20 Ib boat rod for £55 great for Bass and flattys. Anything larger your need a 30/50 Ib boat rod, that'll be good for Cod, Skate, Conger and Smoothhound size fish.
Fixed spool reel if you're thinking of casting but multiplier for more serious stuff. Get some 15Lb line and some swivels, hooks, snaplinks for the weights, Lead weights and beads. That's it really, all you need is bait! Or a lure!

Dont go for a fixed spool reel for boat fishing Martin, ok for beach fishing if you cant use a multiplier, but for a boat you need the winching power a multiplier gives. You only need to be able to lower the gear anyway-casting is not a neccesity for a newbie.
PM me if you need any info-except where our bass are here

i purchased a fishing rod for my son for 3.99 complete with reel and is telescopic, he insisted in using it for fishing on the boat so i stuck some feathers on it for him, no mackeral so stuck a further 4 feathers on it of a smaller variety, so 8 in total. was all quite for a bit then bang, my 5 year old son had 8 good sized mackeral on a kids toy fishing rod, and as people will know mackeral give a good fight, i got em all in although the reel which is made of plastic was struggeling, and we went to 4 feathers and he had great fun, you would not believe how that rod would bend but it never broke. i finally persuaded him to use a proper rod and reel so was easier to bring em in, 10 to 15 for a fixed spool reel is ample and 15 -25 quid ish on a rod or more for telescopic will be fine, if you are a novice then fixed spool reel is fine but if more of a keener fisher man then use a multiplier, 30 quid will get a reasonable one these days.
as with many things these days they are better and cheaper than 20 years ago so dont worry about not having to spend a lot
have fun
