Conger eel in pot

Approx 4 ft and 4” girth thrashing wildly on surfacing not happy with teeth like needles brandishing them with intent in an old fashion ink well crab pot, tried turning it upside down but the bucket was making things worse, something to think about while drifting!

Didn’t want to dispatch it and Too slippery to handle I did try quick ejections with my hand flying out of the pot on failed attempts, took off my floppy hat grabbed it by the tail and it was sent six feet in the air over the starboard side, nasty

That has always been a fear of mine BP ..catching a big conger while fishing from my wee SIB. I think if it got into my boat.. I would jump out and let it have it

Quite a few years ago on the west coast of Lewis during our summer holidays, a conger eel came up the first few steps of the local pier in Uig. It was like something from Jaws. A local fisherman who was working on pots went to get a hand-line and it bit off the hook!

You used to see congers occasionally around the pier as they love nooks and crannies to hide in. Haven't seen one for years though.

I know someone who caught several dozen and had no means of killing them. They locked themselves in the wheel house & motored to port!

I worked on a crabbing boat for a few months before moving here ( Aus ). We worked 600pots per day so getting eels or anything else out of the pots had to be done very quickly, hand in about 2ft from the tail then flip the tail out and the eel will quickly back itself out.

We used to get them quite regularly in the pots, not so much in recent years though. A guy up here skinned one and left it on the washing line to try, still wriggling, his wife nearly had a heart attack

Just possibly .......IF your starving!
Certainly not in my Top Ten though Dave!
Still...
Compared to congealed Pigs Blood ...Fat ...Mixed with Oatmeal and boiled up in a sausage skin!...it MAY be preferable for a change I suppose!

I don’t mind eel. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it though. Black pudding on the other hand is the food of gods.

No such thing as bad black pudding, it's just that some is better than others [emoji106]

I know Religion and Politics are Taboo on the Forum...(despite what some think)... and I'm not sure which "gods" you worship??

But seriously....if YOUR Dayities of choice forsake the usual Ambrosia and countless other gastronomic delights throughout the World and choose to indulge in "Black Pudding!!??" ..above all else!!??
....despite their All seeing All powerful omnipotent status!!...

Id defiantly suggest ....It MAY WELL be time for a change!

Had conger every day in the pots this year on Kintyre which is unusual. This particular terwat dropped onto the floor and I thought the Mrs & daughter were going over the side. Had to get my lifejacket off sharpish and grab it with my fleece before it disappeared under the floor …… It wasn't happy !!!
