Been all over VHF Channel Zero today. Lifeboats were coming from as far as Plymouth.

Selfish and stupid to ignore everyones advice and put all the rescue services at risk due to her impatience. I hope she is ok, but fear the worst, looking at the pieces they have found, the fibreglass bits look as though they might be structural.

Why would anyone with little experience go to sea in an unfamiliar boat at 18:30 solo and go around lands end.

Looking at the video I would of thought she would be sipping champagne

Why would anyone let her, you'd have the broker would have tipped off the coastguard he they were worried.

My guess is that there's a fairly tragic back-story to this. I doubt it was an accident.

With willk on this. More to it...I'm no sailor, but think the boat in the right hands is capable...but the married last week thing....etc..more going on there than an accident I feel. :-(

I agree.

I know the broker, he'd strongly advised against the trip. Also, he didn't know that she left Fal. on Saturday, he'd sent her to a sailing school on Friday and probably hoped that they'd talk some sense into her.

But what did she have to gain, I mean fair enough marry the guy then put him on the boat, claim the insurance - but why put herself at risk ?

Relates to that Jet Ski thread running, just goes to show its not just eBay buyers who can be careless. Can happen at reputable brokers too.

Also relates to that "roadworthy trailer" thread, where its being debated if the seller would be responsible in the event of an incident. Would the same legality apply in cases such as this ?

No there is specific legislation on road vehicles. Nothing equivalent for boats AFAIK. In any case I could sell you a perfectly road worthy car without giving any consideration to your ability or legality to drive it. In boats where there is no official standard then I don't think you can expect a dealer to do anything and one who advises on appropriate training is going above and beyond.

But that's my point, he did that so the wife old claim the insurance. In this case its him that has the cash, so he'd need to be the one on the boat ?

1. Your argument seems to assume a rational appreciation of the risk involved.
2. Your argument probably overstates the risk to rescue services - the level of risk to rescue services should be carefully managed.
3. Your argument probably underestimates the risk to the general public of putting an inexperienced driver in a very powerful car.

The kid and the Ferrari argument is a bit out of date now as young people are finding it harder and harder to get insurance even on very modest cars.
