Researching about the Snorkel I found info that states that when it is fitted the engines lose power and torque, is this right?
The company that alleges this produce this :-
http://www.hi-deal.com/shop/customer...3&cat=1&page=1
I have nevere heard of it before but it should give a 10% saving on fuel plus more power, anyone heard of or used these?
Thanks

Some people swear by them - others at them!!!
A snorkle will reduce airflow slightly by it's length BUT this is then offset by the cooler air and the ram effect so ends up about the same!!!
The only time you will get a problem is with a V8 working hard - which is why I am going to fit 2!!!

Cod, As you are mechanicaly minded and know loads about engines could you tell if that gadget would be worth a punt or should I just get a chip for the ECU?

What you want is a Van Aaken smart box - they have been tweaking Land Rovers for years.
The smart box does not alter anything and can be easily removed when needed!!!

One last point Pete - just remember ALL new engines need running in despite what the makers say!!!
The TD5 doesn't really loosen up until it gets to about 10,000 miles - I noticed that in the Discovery I had but then again it was on hire - only took me about 4 or 5 weeks to rack up the mileage!!!
Don't rev the engine too much - especially when cold - don't let it labour in too high a gear etc. And remember with a Turbo Diesel to let the engine idle for 10 seconds or so before switching off.
Forgive me if I am teaching Granny to suck eggs but I tend to look after my engines very well - never had a problem with any car i have owned engine wise - brakes, suspension and tyres tend to suffer rather a lot though!!!

Cod, I have NO experience of owning my own Land Rover although I have hammered many military ones, now I have researched the Van Aaken and it comes in at £450 incl VAT. As you know this is a physical box, the other one is a reprogramme of the ECU so you don't get to hold something , can you please clarify that I should not interfere for at least 10,000 miles because that may be 3 yrs time
Thanks for the advice re running in.
P.S. I am expecting some Mega parcels of accessories soon, I got my mats, rear work lamp and A frame from a main dealer (I went for the original rubbery/plastic one from Land Rover, I wanted to be pedestrian friendly ish ), the rest from Paddock.
Thanks for the info on the accessory companies.
Could anyone kindly help re wiring up the Wipac spotlamps I bought which will fit on the A frame, do I need a loom of some sorts or are there plugs already there? apparently the lights come without a loom. Is it an easy job or one for an expert. And with regards to the work light for lighting the tow hook and boat, does this just link in to an interior light or something?
I found a full page on chipping see :-
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/archiv...php/t-395.html
Any comments?
Thanks

Yep, £595+vat for D3 for a extra 50 hp, he also reckons that it is not detectable by LR dealers so warranty is OK!
If you want a box then Tunit are good £398 + vat http://www.tunit.co.uk/V-PD.php

Thanks Nick, I may just try it for a week first before fiddling with the power, although I may need the extra power due to the weight of accessories
I don't recommend anyone going for the Original rubber/plastic chunky A frame it is 'very' expensive, I said OK and must have not heard the price properly as it was in amongst the other stuff, when I got the total that I had been billed I nearly fell off my seat Never mind, all good fun

Pete no need to wait until 10,000 miles although I probably would!!! 10,000 miles is when the engine is fully freed up - I would say about 3,000 miles and it would be ok.

Richard, I was looking at Shoguns, why are you going for one of them, have I missed something?
I was looking at the SWB Shogun as it would act like a tractor unit with the boat and trailer, but the Defender should do the same, just the turning circle is a bit shite on the Defender
Don't tell me I've cocked up on this
Well better get the boat out of the marina for some launching practice this weekend, unless anyone else wants me to launch them, save damaging my boat

I bought a Landrover in 1991 ex the military in SHAFE. 300 miles on the clock. 1973 110 LWB 2.5 Diesel. Had been on bricks all its life, started up once a month. Seats had a rats nest, but basically sound. Drove it to Kiev and temperature was -40C.
It is still going strong living in a container in a small holding servicing churches in a remote region with mud roads in summer and corrugated ice and snow in winter.
It can be serviced and repaired by the locals
My case rests

Well I'm no 4x4 expert, my best guess is that the answer is 16.
I've kept my eye on Disco problems and prices for a while, and my situation is probably far different to yours as it's my main vehicle not just my tow vehicle as my garage isn't Dr Ferdinand's domain.
Disco's and other LR products do look rather expensive and of questionable quality when compared against Mr Mitsubishi's offerings.
Al IMHO of course, and I'm usually the first to advocate buying British. Sorry Land Rover, but I'm not sure that I'll put my trust in your product when I change my car.
Pete - the best of luck with your Defender - I hope it runs well and gives you many happy hours, months and years of trouble-free ownership.

Pete - the best of luck with your Defender - I hope it runs well and gives you many happy hours, months and years of trouble-free ownership.
Thats probably the best "tongue in cheek" bit of prose I have heard in years!!!!!!!!!!.
If you want something-
- good looking
- can tow 2800 kgs with ease
- probably bigger than your merc station wagon inside
- wont let you down
- cheap but excellent at about 21000 quid all in( leather seats, sunroof, airco, abs, mp3 radio, cruise control., sequential automatic.... ect ect and offers you a three year unlimited warranty( if LR did that they would be bankrupt)
then
go KIA SORENTO 2.5 crdi. - there is nothing comparable for the same money.
The 2.5 diesel is a real smoothy and not overstresed at 140 bhp
A three year unlimited mileage warranty
A three year roadside assistance package that covers you across mainland Europe as well as in the UK
A six year anti-perforation warranty*
A three year paintwork warranty

Come on guys.
Give PeteB a break. He's bought a 90 and thats that.
A Kia is probably a very nice vehicle, but the risiduals will be very poor in the UK (especially compared to a defender) because of Kia's rep as a cheap brand.
Pete is looking for helpful advice not a sales pitch from KIA!!!
As I've said before, the defender is an ideal utility vehicle for what he wants, and a Sorento with Leather and every electronic gadget is not really suitable for jumping into wearing wet boating gear.
Ken.
