OK then. Here is my feeble attempt at being scientific.
Assume e. coast.
Photo taken at sunset (?) into the sun (see shadows).
Therefore camera facing west.
Two con trails in sky-heading towards Heathrow?
Therefore photo taken south of Thames Estuary.
How am I doing?

Keith is correct. Which makes Brian wrong in all bar correctly guessing that its the East Coast.
Charles, You've just never had the joys of boating around in muck (our version of mucking around in boats.). Here we consider 6ft of water to be an elegant sufficiency!

hey , a kindred spirit - boating about in muck - we use that line here in the Irish Sea usually when we explain that yellow buoys may indicate a swimming area or jet ski area or other points of interest - but around here they are normally associated with sewer outfalls!

Let me in on the secret.
How do you know it's sunrise not sunset?
Alright, so my scientific examination doesn't qualify me for a job in your department then?

One of the best places to buy Digital Cameras on the internet is at:
http://www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk/
They have reviews of all cameras currently available and are about 20% cheeper than the high street. You can also email you pictures to them and they will print them in photo quality for you.
The Canon powershot A40 is quoted at £208 inc 8 meg card and delivery.

Hi Alan
To put you out of your misery:
The colour of the sky. The refraction of light from a rising sun is different from that of a setting sun. This is due to the steadying increase in the angle that light hits the atmosphere rather than the decreasing angle of a sunset. It is a sort of 'doppler' effect. You know, this is why an approaching train whistle sounds higher as it comes towards you and lower as it goes away. I ran a copy of the picture through a spectrum analyser and made the appropriate calculations. This is a technique we use when we have this sort of thing in major crime investigations.
Keith (elimentary my dear Alan) Hart

Correct!
Well done Mike the pic of the barges is a bit of a giveaway! The sunrise photo is actually taken out of the my back bedroom window very early one morning. It was such a fantastic picture it even made up for being up so darn early!
