Drifting Yacht found - puzzled

US sailors rescued after five months adrift in Pacific - BBC News

So they had 12 months worth of dried food, but no PLB or EPIRB?

Really?!?

They look mighty healthy for five months adrift. I’d have eaten the dog by that stage. Oh and rigged a jury rig!!

You'd have got on well with Tom Crean, pictured below with his famous Stew Dogs...

Boat licenses are optional in the United States.

Common sense is also treated as optional.

There is a video on line that explains a bit more, but just leaves you more confused. They broke a spreader (or actually a spreader fixing) which seems to be why they stopped sailing. But that was early on in the trip and they chose to press on.

The engine bay got flooded at some point and killed the starter.

They seemed to think they were only 24 hrs from death in the interview - but had food left, the boat was afloat etc so unless they murdered each other I am not sure why!

When I hear these stories I always think of 'Survive the Savage Sea' by Dougal Robertson. He and his family spent 37 days adrift in the Pacific after their yacht was holed by whales. He had nothing more than a bag of lemons and some basic rations. Always makes me reach for a corned beef sandwich when I read it.

So I reckon one was lying to the other - the old "Oh dear, we seem to be out of petrol" play....

One was trying to cause the other to fall in love with her when in a confined space?
